Might sound a ridiculous question but is it simply a matter of plugging a mic into the
guitarport via the guitar input socket or what?. Tried a basic mic with no result!

Yes, that should do it. You can use the vocal presets that come with GuitarPort / GearBox to give you a bit of ambience.
