I've been away from my comp recording gear for quite awhile. We can now get Riffworks standard as a upgrade/crossgrade from Sonoma. Riffworks will no longer be married to my Guitarport.
I have just done all the gear box upgrades and got everyting mostly working like I remember it. I am just curious as to how do the Core tones of the amp models sound in the included amplitude versus the guitarport/gearbox models.

Im sure everyone has their favorites in both camps, but is one clearly better that the other or is there anything that is just too cool that I should know about. I understand that amplitude is a lite version.

I am trying to decide if the added cost of the standard version is worth it over the upgraded Line6 version.

Thanks, Low

Lowenzz,

I think you're absolutely correct when you say,

and I don't think you'll ever get a clear split one way or the other. Each seems to have its own supporters.

Me .. I go for GearBox as I think that Amplitube LE isn't a patch on what GB3 offers.

However, I think that you might just get a clearer steer on the RiffWorks Standard v Line 6 edition question. For me, RWS wins hands down. Not being tied to a Line6 device gives you more flexibility and future proofing yet you can still use GuitarPort, TonePort etc.
Cheers!

GearBox wins in my books for ease of use......no latency issues which I have problems with using Amplitube.

I think Amplitube has the sound quality edge tho........

I use Gearbox all the time. But then again, I used to work for Line 6. I hear Amplitube 2 is pretty good. It's the latency that does it for me. Amplitube LE runs as a plugin that you're monitoring through while you record. So you need to use a real low buffer setting to reduce that latency.

Gearbox does it's monitoring outside of the recording software so that buffer settings inside Riffworks or any other program will have zero affect on the latency of your guitar. For me, that's it right there. Because I can play it with a better feel and response, I'm going with Gearbox.

Well I went with the standard version so I could lose a bit of line6. I guess I'll be able to judge amplitude for myself and like I could ever have too many amp models, YEAH RIGHT.

I honestly have no idea what else is different, I just wanted more drummers to begin with. thanks for the feedback. and yes I am very intolerant of latency as well.

Well I am glad it isn't just me then..........the latency was the reason I finally gave up on Amplitube. But I thought maybe it was something I was doing wrong.

I watched some guy from Line 6 explain latency and the benefits of the Gearbox software, and to be honest thought he was full of crap......turns out he wasn't.

Hayden you no longer work for Line 6? Devoting your time to DH only now?

No longer work for them Shreddy old boy. DH all the way. Actually, I'm applying to grad school to study computer research in music and acoustics. I'll find out if I get in at the end of February. Wish me luck.

Was I the Line 6 guy full of crap? It sounds like something I would have said. But, yes, the latency problem they nearly solved is pretty damn good. I say nearly because there's still latency with gearbox, but around 6-8ms round trip on the default setting. That's like standing 6 to 8 feet from your guitar amp when you play. Pretty usable. A POD, because of its stand alone DSP driven nature, is less than 2ms.

I need a POD that can also do vocal processing, and I'll be happy.

No it wasn't you..........lol

If it was I may have believed it first time I heard it..........

Turns out it was all true. And for that Reason (no pun intended) I am saying I would go with them over IK.

Best of luck Hayden.....
