im still having trouble with standard as regards my graphics.let me explain.when i open riffworks and start recording the graphics on riffworks breaks up.the clip meter at the bottom of standard ends up in the middle of riffworks along with the pan and gain dials.they break away from where they are supposed to be.some one has advised me to get the radeon 9550 256mb graphics card to go into the agp socket in motherboard.any views about this card? or what could be happening?ive got pentium 4 ,3.0ghz one and half gb ram.i do not have a graphics card on the mother board whatsoever.thanks.randy is also kindly looking into solutions for this at sonomawireworks.

Hi Chris,

Updating the graphics card may or may not fix this problem. You didn't have this problem until upgrading to a P4 and adding the extra RAM. You didn't have the problem before, and the graphics card hasn't changed, so it doesn't seem likely that it would be the problem.

I don't have any other suggestions though unfortunately. The graphic glitches you're getting isn't something that's been reported by any other customers.

I asked in an earlier email if you've hammered on any other audio apps or processor intensive programs since getting the P4 upgrade. I'd like to know if all other programs are behaving correctly. Email apps and web browsers don't tax your system though, so you'd need to run something a little more hardcore. What 'cha got?

Hello,

i think when you use a Celeron the graphics memory is shared. I would suggest that you right click on the desk top and select properties, then click the settings tab then the advanced button at the bottom, then try to check out the setting in the graphics menus that you will find in the area I just directed you to. You'll have to try many different settings in this area. If this doesn't work you may need some BIOS setting changes to un cache or un shadow you graphics memory. I would suggest to get rid of the Celeron, it's not a good processor for music programs. Also an inexpensive PCI or AGP graphics card instead of the onboard (Built-in) Graphics would be a great help. If you don't know how to do these kind of settings you could try to take the machine to a place like Comp-USA to have them adjust it for you, just tell them what's happening with the Riffworks program and the graphics corruption. HTH

i would jump past P4 and go to Pentium D instead, which is a dual core
(its the same as having two PCU's literaly) it also uses PCI Express for
video which also helps.
Its not all that expensive of an upgrade Pentium D's are around the same
price as P4's these days
Go to Tiregerdirect.com and check out what they have

The Pentium Ds will require a new motherboard, wheres the Celerons and P4 use a board that's cross compatible. It's a good idea though, and it looks as though Chris is planning on upgrading to a new computer soon.

Right on Chris,

My recommendation, and I'm sorry if I offend anyone running one of these, would be to stay away from Packard Bell (I hear these are still sold over there), Compaq and Gateway. Though I heard that Gateway just got their old CEO back, so there may be hope for them in the future. Dell isn't to bad, just don't get the super entry level. Stay away from HP unless you're buying a server. Just talk around, see what people are happy with. If you have a computer guru, see what he recommends.

Good luck!

I have a Dell Dimension and it has had its issues but several techs in India and I have managed to keep is working. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (it’s a book) applies here. Despite rough times, the Dell and I have grown fond of each other.

It’s difficult to get a grasp on Gateway. Consumer Reports rates them at the top but I have friends who agree with randy.

Now let’s talk about Vista………….Okay, I won’t go there.

I am sending this message via my MacBook Pro, which is a jewel so far.
