Subject says it all:) I like to find backing tracks online (usually in mp3 form) and lay solos over them. Normally, before version 2, I had to use a totally different recording program (Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro 3) to import the backing and record leads. Is there a way to import mp3's into Riffworks Version 2 Line 6 Edition? Thanks!

At the moment the answer is 'no' - unless you can change a .mp3 file to a .rex file. The Reason gurus out there will be able to answer that one.
Cheers!

May have to look into some Rex file to Mp3 converter...I'll do an internet search on that. Thanks for the reply and if anyone else out there knows of one, please let me know. Thanks!

Wes, you can play the MP3 file via an MP3 player and record in in RW as a riff. Good luck.

BTW, I like your by line, ""If I was perfect, I wouldn't be Christian, I'd be CHRIST!""

Since I use a Guitar Port, I guess I could try using its media playing capabilities and see what happens. Hadn't thought of that. Thanks!:)

Hey fellas,

There is currently no import audio function for RiffWorks, wav or mp3. Recycle will allow you to turn an uncompressed audio file into a REX file which can be used with the REX player. As far as I know, there is no other way to make REX files than with Recycle. REX is a patented technology by Propellerhead Software, so no one but has the rights to make a program that creates REX files, but people can make REX files and sell those.

Your other option is to use another audio program that runs as a Rewire Slave so that you can play audio along with RiffWorks. You would be able to do this with Reason, Ableton Live, Cubase, and more.

Wow, you don't get much for $99 do you. You get what one drum beat and ability to save files. I use my guitarport, get the backing track in hopes of importing into Riffworks 2.0. Don't even get that, lol So now I am stuck with what I was doing before, sending the GP through my Audigy Line in, hitting play in Gearbox, hitting record in audacity, which is free. :(

How do you do that, not sure how you record the output of an MP3 player into RW as a riff?

I'd very much like to import backing tracks into RW. Looking forward to suggestions on how to do that now, and also if RW adds that feature - allowing me to do it directly.

By the way, this is my first post, I bought the guitarport/RW bundle and am having a blast. Great program, I love it.

Thanks!

Hi Lobo and welcome to the RiffWorks forum!

Plug the output of your mp3 player (phones) in to the input of the GP. You'll need to find a cable with suitable connectors - possibly mini-jack to 1/4" jack.
Choose a clean setting from GP and then record in to RW as if the mp3 player was an instrument.

Good to have you onboard and look forward to your first RiffCast! :)
Cheers!

Scott,

Thanks for the welcome!

I'll give your suggestion a try. Hmm, I'm wondering to myself if I can output a backing track from iTunes, into the GP through a cable, and record in RW, all from/to the same hard drive?? I think I'll give it a try. I know the better solution is to buy a dedicated hard drive for the audio files....

Sorry about not following up on this topic, guys! I hadn't gotten any email notifications:( Anyways, thanks to gatorjj for his massive help! I've practiced over the track you created for me, and even recorded a couple of times, but kept making mistakes and having to start over:) Then I read a thread on here earlier today about using a riff's "layer info" dropdown list to possibly take out some bad notes, etc. Honestly, I had seen the sound wave bar before in that dropdown list, but had no idea how to use it. I REALLY need to start reading the manual!:) I'll let you guys know when I finally finish it. But don't hold your breath...I'm a massive procrastinator!

I have recorded the other way round from a Rifflink session. Started my Creative recorder software and set it it recording then hit play on Riffworks. This gave me a nice wave file of a collab at that point which I was then able to play on my pc or even mess about with in Audacity etc. I did this because sometimes the Rifflink files on the server get screwed up and you lose the ability to get back to them. I know this is not what you've been concerned about but I thought it might be helpful in the future.

With regard to getting other stuff into Riffworks, I have connected line out from my monitor amp, played back mp3's on my pc connected to PODXT 1/4 jack input and recorded them onto a long riff and have also recorded sequencer stuff from my keyboard the same way. As Scotty has said, you need the relevant adaptor cables.

Welcome aboard, I'm very new but already well accepted, I look forward to hearing your stuff.

Best regards,

Uncle Bill.

Thanks! When you're "muting or cutting out" your "bum notes" from the "Layer Info" section (blue soundwave), are you just dropping down the "ghost" line where your bum note is? I'm assuming that's how you're doing it (I went back and read the most recent FAQ). After doing this, are you just re-recording that specific spot in a new layer? Thanks!
