I say Sonoma, when they receive spam from these obvious spamming a-holes set up a sticky thread in which all spammers e-mail addresses are then published. The board members can then decide as to what they wish to do to "retaliate" against these a-holes.

Would using captcha when entering a post stop this?

Sounds like a good idea Bluesy, no doubt Sonoma have their own ideas and are on the case. I would like to have been able to assist personally but I don't think any of my Mumbo Jumbo bins are large enough for this size of A-Hole !!!!

The threat of possibly publishing their e-mails for violation of the sites policy on spam might deter a few, not all.
I won't go into detail....but there is a way of siccing the dogs on the dogs. Just put up their e-mail addresses.

The addresses are all forged, so when you reply you'll likely get a bounce or you'll end up spamming some innocent person who's address was being falsely used. There's no way to fight back other than to ignore the emails, filter well by blocking known spam-friendly domains, and NEVER follow spammers links or buy their products.

Here's a helpful site:

Randy, is it possible to use something like captcha with PunBB and also when we post comments to songs in RiffCaster? Sorry, limited knowledge with this open source stuff.

We use a spam filter on RiffCaster. I feel its been doing a good job. Are you seeing spam get through?

Over time we can use this same filter for the forums. Using a captcha is a good idea, although there are ways of beating those as well. Its very difficult to verify someone is a human. Maybe we should require a killer guitar riff....j/k

Ultimately I would like to use a combination of spam filters and our users to help delete spam.

Here is the spam filter we have used so far on riffcaster www.akismet.com.

I'm sure some of would be happy to act as moderators and do things like get rid of spam. I certainly have seen less of it on RiffCaster now that you mention it.
Cheers!
Scott

Spamming must be profitable but I am amazed people respond to them in the first place. Of course, a few are cleverly disguised.

Anyway, I’ve got to go! I just received notice I’ve inherited $25 million from a long-lost uncle living (actually recently deceased) in Kenya. Please keep my new found wealth hush-hush and DON’T ask me for loan! :D

Reports regarding the death and wealth of your uncle are vastly exaggerated. He is very much alive, kicking and flat broke. (Or should that say Fat Bloke ?)
However, he has now returned from Kenya and is presently living in darkest UK. He is currently living on a diet of Riffworks, Spam and Jack Daniels. The main reason for this being that he lives too far from Mickey's cooking, mixing bowl and MMMmmmm............Beer !!!!

I hope this clears the confusion.

Signed for and on behalf of,

Uncle Bill.

P.S. He reports that he has had enough Spam and will, in the near future, be asking Sonoma for corned beef.

Ya got to admit, poor Hormel will never live the Spam thing down. They were having enough derogatory remarks about the cube of "meat??" that slides out of a can and shakes like jello prior to the internet.
I would have voted for "twinkies" myself........."I got a bunch of twinkies in my mailbox today"
Oh well.....either one stop a heart dead LOL

I don't mean to "tell" Sonoma their bussiness, but I agree with Scott, that there are members here who would be glad to assist and delete this spam crap. Some of it has gotten way outta hand and ya do have some younger viewers on this site; and it would be a shame if these spam posting twinkie sucking jerks become an issue with some parents to block this site.
If ya want I'll help......but I am pretty damn sure there are plenty of the other standard members here that would too.

Sorry about all the spam lately. We are out of the country on a business trip, so I have not been able to keep the spam down myself. I would welcome help from a couple of volunteers until we have the technology in place to take care of it automatically on the forums. I'll email a couple of you offline to ask for your help.

Danke,
Michelle
