I have been playing around with the demo for the last few days, and I have a few q's that hopefully someone knows the answer to...

1) is there no way to copy a layer from a riff into another riff?

i.e. I recorded a few layers together, now I want to break them apart so that I can treat each one separately..is there no way to copy/paste, or cut/paste the layer from riff1 into riff2?

2) can I comp together a take from multiple layers? i.e. bars 1 and 2 are good from layer1, bars 3 and 4 are good from layer2. Can I make a layer3 from layer1 bar 1+2, layer2 bar3+4?

Hi Hotrod,

I hope I can answer your questions ...

1) strictly speaking you can't 'copy' layers from one riff to another. You can however copy (duplicate) the whole riff and then delete the layers you don't want from it.

2) you can't make a composite 'layer 3' as such from bars 1 & 2 in 'layer 1' and bars 3 & 4 in 'layer 2'. However, you can use the 'Info' function on 'layer 1' to mute out bars 3 & 4 and then do the same in 'layer 2' muting out bars 1 & 2. That way the two layers should run concurrently but give the effect of being just one layer.

I hope this makes sense.
Cheers!
Scott

Hi there Hotrod,

You can't copy a Layer from one Riff to another Riff. You can duplicate the Riff and then add other/different Layers.....change the drums for the Riff...change the effects on that particular Layer.
On the second part of your question, let me try to give an example:
Let's say your are recording a 4 bar guitar passage and you let the Riff loop twice thus recording 2 takes of this passage.
The 1st 2 bars of the 1st pass are good for you but suck for the 2nd 2 bars.
In your 2nd pass the opposite is the case. So bars 1 & 2 of Layer 1 is good and bars 3 & 4 of Layer 2 is good.
Now you can open and view the audio for the Layers by clicking on the "Info" buttons.
In Layer 1 you can then lower the audio for bars 3 & 4. In Layer 2 you can lower the audio for bars 1 & 2.
This is also how you can do a fade by sloping these lines.

You two are ultra fast! Thanks!

Layer copying is a feature that will hopefully be in the next version of RiffWorks.

Thanks, for some reason, I didn't think to just copy the whole riff, then delete the layers I didn't want repeated...DOH!

As far as comping a track, I am coming from a DAW background, so I am still in that mindset. I guess I could always play it correctly, but when you are in the flow, and just want to piece together a quick comp, it is nice to be able to grab specific phrases from multiple takes and digitally splice them all together....it's quick, too :-)

thanks everyone for the quick replies! A new user could get spoiled by this!

this sounds simple, lol, that's my problem.
i want to chop the drums off an ending. when i opened the info, i saw the wave thing and found the line bar that i can drag, ok.
but when i played it back the drums are still there. then i just stopped trying, (it was late)
soooooo, would i set the audio bar and then dup the layer? to get the adjustment?
how do i listen to see if i didn't cut out something good and if i do, can it be undone easily?

like when i want to do a little diddy in 1/2 bar or 3 bars but have some space left over, how would i splice them back into the main body?
exmp=sudden stop and diff guitar fx and drum, 21/2 bars, then back in.
arrrrggh, am i clear enough? lol

i know if i can do that i can drag up to song line for smoothing the transition. right?

lol, any of you guys come over and show me? BBQ and beer on me! and/or some great chinese food!

thanks,
gary

I'm not going to get into the main body of what you are trying to resolve as others are far more qualified than me. However, you will find that you cannot use the wave device to fade the drummer out. If I want to do an easy fade out I just copy a few riffs, lower the total riff volume a bit on each, tweak a few layers around in each, maybe add a bit of lead - that sort of thing, maybe this will help a bit.

The main reason for my reply is this,

If you're going to do Riffworks you have to do late and maybe even later, maybe even very close to it getting early, maybe even when it definitely is early, maybe even when it's so much past early it makes you late, maybe even when you're now so much past early and late you have to take the day off work etc etc !!!!!!!!

Get the picture ?

A couple of final points, you cannot do RiffWorks without getting totally hooked and you definitely can't do RiffWorks without supplying Mickey's

MMMMmmmmm...............Beer !!!!!!

Now I know I've been very helpful.

"i want to chop the drums off an ending. when i opened the info, i saw the wave thing and found the line bar that i can drag, ok.
but when i played it back the drums are still there."

You could (on that particular riff that you want the fade) Mix to Riff. Then you would have a layer that contained all the audio including the drums. (The Instant Drummers don't have the audio "info" view like the layers do.)
But after you do the Mix to Riff the drums and all the other audio could be faded as a "master" track so to speak.

There really isn't a way of splicing layers within a Riff, so ya kinda have to have a plan on the length of a Riff before hand.

I hope this helps you out.
Actually I just got home here at 8am.........so I kinda out of it myself. :)

I believe we have found the RiffLink Junkies version of Yogi Berra! Or maybe that's Yogi Bear (or in this case, Yogi Beer?!), both probably fit!
