RiffWorks Recording Software (Mac/Win)

I've been thinking for quite a while now that RiffWorks would be pretty much perfect as it is (for my needs, anyway) if it had one simple item added to the program...markers!!!! If I had the ability to jump forward or backward within a song layer to get to the EXACT point where I need to begin recording, I would be in heaven. As it is, I have to click on the song layer, and then wait for the song to play out to the point where I want to begin recording. If I screw up, I can't just stop and snap back to the start of the recording point as I can with my other DAWs and my Boss BR-1180CD...I actually have to re-cue the song from the beginning and again wait until the song plays out to the point where I want to start recording.

If there were markers available that would allow you to snap to a certain part in the song sequencer and start recording within a songlayer from exactly that spot rather than having to start from the beginning...I honestly would have nothing to complain about. Sonoma actually listened to me (and probably hundreds of other users...I can't take all the credit, I'm sure) about adding the songlayers in the first place...I had been asking for years for a linear recording option in RiffWorks which would be ADDITIVE to the layer-based recording...and was I shocked when version 2 hit and actually had that feature!!! That was awesome. Now, if we could just get some sort of marker system in place, then RiffWorks really would be like a complete DAW. You could literally design a complete song-based drum track and full rhythm backing tracks using the loop based recording engine, and then you could record lead guitars, lead and backing vocals, and other random sound bits and effects throughout the song using the songlayers and the markers to get you right where you need to be...snap to the end of the second chorus to begin the guitar solo, snap to the end of each verse to set yourself up for recording the backing vocals, snap to the middle of the last verse to add some cool delayed guitar leads behind the main rhythm track to gear up for the kick-ass ending...etc.

Anyway, if I'm a complete idiot (and we CANNOT discount this as a possibility :-)), and the marker feature is already there in RiffWorks and I just don't know about it, someone please point out the error of my ways!!!

If I am correct and there is no marker feature, will you wonderful people at Sonoma put that on the wish list for Version 3???

Thanks for reading.

Hey aray69, you can do that songlayer thing by clicking on the top part of songlayer where the timeline is and start recording from wherever you want, I reckon.

the main reason i love riffworks is because the way it works is so guitarist friendly i would keep the format totally as it,the only things i could see improving it would be to allow third party plugins and also it would be great if you could buy drum fill tracks and be able to add fills anywhere you wanted in a track this would really bring songs to life,

Yo,
My request is simple. All I want to do is fade in/out songs when mixing down the final product.

Thanks. You guys are on top of everything. This really is one of the best music recording/processing programs ever made. So easy to use from the beginning and the support of the staff and communitee are second to none.

Thanks again

the advice by wedgebill on fading out is absolutely correct, the only snag is you cant fade the drums which is a bummer mabey this is something to add for the next version of riffworks

To fade the drums mix to riff and fade out the same way.... you can mix to riff 1 Riff at a time(Last Riff) or the entire song , to fade out if need be...the bummer is you have to unload the songbar to do it...I usually do a print screen to remember what order i was in just in case I forget beforehand.....

As others have acknowledged above, the beauty of RiffWorks is its simplicity. RWS is the perfect tool for those of us lacking recording studio expertise. The software gives us creative control and independence.

Many of us were introduced to RiffWorks along with another product such as GuitarPort. RiffWorks was advertised primarily as a way to quickly lay down musical ideas. However and just as quickly, we learned that RiffWorks’ capabilities exceeded those limitations.

For a bargain basement price, RiffWorks allowed us to create reasonably good recordings (full melodies – not just riffs), to experiment, AND to express ourselves. To that end, the desire to perfect our material as well as gain more control does increase with time and ability.

The issue and key to future success for Sonoma Wire Works is how to maintain the simplicity (which is the basic concept and mission) while satisfying our ever-evolving aspirations.

I am confident SWW will succeed – thanks to the exchange of ideas and wishes expressed on this forum.
