How do you make an instrument sound like it is off in the distance? Is this done just with reverb or is it more complicated than that? When I originally mixed this I wanted the sax to sound distant but I never could come up with that so I used the doubler preset under delay. Any tips are welcome, thanks.

First I'm not too bright, I've been listening to your RR song over and over trying to hear the sax LOL

Think of the property of distant sound, it's a little quieter and arrives later than the instruments that are closer, and probably has some reflections mixed in with what you hear. Now we need to find a way to accomplish that in RiffWorks.

The first thing I would try is to use reverb with more weight towards the effect (mix knob further to the right), and damp it down more (damping knob to the right) so it doesn't ring too much. Use the size knob to put it off in the distance. See if that gets it. I don't know if you can get it as far as you want without it getting muddy that way but start there and let us know!

Turn the mix way up on the reverb and keep the volume on that track quite compared to the other tracks in that part/song. That's my recommendation. :)

Actualy, Bill is right....(in a sense of humor :D )
If you have a good enough mic and the space, playing in one room with the mic outside that room....micing the room so to speak; will work.

You certainly are my good man and I would love you to come and play that sexy sax for me, out in the back yard, outstanding your field or even just leaning on my dustbins.

Aha, just had a stroke of genius, have you thought about getting in a dustbin like one of mine and playing saxy in there ?

I'll operate the Riffworker machine for ya and my missus will bring you tea and cakes.

Deal ?

Yes good point Tim! I was assuming it was a synth sax but people often overlook the obvious when they want something to sound 5 feet back...just mic it 5 feet back!

Don't gimme that mumbo jumbo! You're absolutely right, there are lots of obvious ways to record that we don't think about in the computer world! I bet a lot of us work real hard on the Gear Box to mimic the sound of the amp sitting next to them too!

You could still use the mic room thing....just stick the amp in the room.
Bathrooms work great with small powered amps.....10-15-20 ranges are best.
