Hey,

I've got a PC desktop with GuitarPort and RiffWorks version 2, but I'm also about to get a Macbook laptop.

1. Is there anyway for me to download the Mac version of RW version 2 for free, since I paid for it already? (i.e., I just want to use it on a Mac).

2. Is GuitarPort universal to Macs and PCs? i.e., there aren't two types of GuitarPorts, right? Just one GP, but different drivers and software?

3. If I want to use Mac's Garage Band, can I use GuitarPort? i.e., what if I just want to use GP instead of getting a Mbox? i.e., use GP with Garageband, instead of RW.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello Steve,

You can do all these things you want to do. The Line 6 Edition of RiffWorks is tied to the hardware that you originally used to activate the product. So you used a Guitarport. If you take that guitarport with you, you can use RiffWorks on multiple computers. You can download RiffWorks Line 6 Edition from http://www.line6.com/software

Guitarport hardware is universal now. You want to use Gearbox 3.10 also available from http://www.line6.com/software

Guitarport and the Gearbox software will function as a CoreAudio device on the mac. You'll be able to use it with Garageband and any other recording software that supports CoreAudio.

I switched to the Mac about 2 years ago and it's been superb.

I use RiffWorks to sketch out songs, then import the audio into Garageband to tweak it and add extra flavours.

You'll need at least 1Gb of RAM to make the most of RiffWorks, so budget for that when purchasing your Macbook.

The Gearbox software is very stable on OS X and, in my opinion, gives a hotter signal than the Windows version.

If you need any advice on selecting the right Macbook model and installing/configuring/using the software then let me know and I'll help you as much as I can.

Cheers,

Alan
