I just purchased a Laney LC50 amp and it is a sweet sounding amp. I read that you can put the Pod into the Effects Loop then into RiffWorks. Would that work? I would like to record what I hear from the amp into RiffWorks and go from there. Would it be better to get a GuitarPort. I like my amp very much and would like to keep it in the mix.

Don, you should be able to hook the send to the POD's input and the POD's L output to the return. I don't know much about the Laney (it looks nice though!), whether there's a tube preamp before the FX loop or if that sweet tone is coming after but it's easy enough to try and see how it goes! The POD's signal output will probably be a lot hotter than the amp wants to see back so start with the output knob at 0 and work your way up.

Start with the POD running with a preamp/no amp. You might want to experiment with some of the stuff in the POD as well, to see what kind of tone actually ends up in RiffWorks.

The other alternative (a great one by the way) would be to actually mic the amp.

Cheers,

If you want to record with a mic then I suggest a UX1 or UX2. It has the proper mic inputs and the included pre-amp consoles are great for shaping the sound. You'll need a small boom, and a decent dynamic mic(requires no phantom power) to get started. Don't expect great results right off the bat, micing is whole other art that takes time and experimentation.

Honestly, Line6's technique is so good that it's very hard to get as quality as the Pod without pro gear. Now if they would just give us a Laney model that would be sweet.

Good luck its fun.

Take a look at this, you might find this very helpful for mic'd amp recording techniques, mic positioning etc. I haven't studied it in great detail but it looked pretty cool on the face of it.
