Hey guys,

I am new to the forum, but I recently performed the crossgrade from the L6 Edition of RiffWorks to the Standard Edition...and I can tell you that it is worth EVERY penny of the $69 if you have gear other than Line 6 stuff that you wish to record.

Prior to the crossgrade, I had to have my TonePort hooked up to the computer, and from there I could run my other (non-Line 6) modelers into RiffWorks by plugging them into the line inputs on the TonePort. This wasn't really a problem as much as an inconvenience. It worked just fine by by-passing the amp/cab sims in Gearbox (very little coloration of tone in bypass mode), and I was perfectly happy with that set up...until l I forgot to bring my TonePort to a jam session a few weeks ago. I had my POD XT Live with me, but since RiffWorks was tied to the TonePort, I couldn't use the XT Live to record with RiffWorks. I couldn't even perform the license key transfer with L6 Monkey because I didn't have the TonePort with me (in order to perform a transfer you have to have a computer with internet access, L Monkey, and BOTH pieces of gear...the device that the license keys are coming from and the device that they are going to).

One of the other guys at the jam, however, had the Standard Version of RiffWorks, and I was able to plug into his system with not only my POD XT Live, but his DigiTech GNX3000...not to mention the wonderful Amplitube Live 2 Program that comes with the Standard Version. Amplitube Live 2 is not NEARLY as flexible and feature laden as Gearbox...but you can still get some remarkably outstanding tones out of it.

So...I started thinking about how nice it would be to not HAVE to have my TonePort in order to connect non-Line 6 gear to RiffWorks...and I decided to go for the crossgrade. It has been wonderful. The flexibility of being able to connect ANY ASIO supported gear (DigiTech GNX3000, Zoom G2.1U, Zoom A2.1U...not just Line 6 gear) in addition to being able to use Amplitube Live 2...and (probably the biggest advantage) not having to transfer license keys if I want to be able to use my PODxt, or PODxt Live WITHOUT having to put the TonePort in between them has been an ENORMOUS advantage.

The bottom line is this...if you have the Line 6 Edition of RiffWorks, but you also have other modeling gear that you would like to use with RiffWorks, the $69 crossgrade is worth its weight in gold!!!! If all you have is one piece of Line 6 gear and nothing else...then it probably won't make much of a difference to you (although the addition of Amplitube Live 2 really justifies the $69 price-tag all by itself even if you are a Line 6 user with only one piece of L6 gear...Amplitube just gives you even MORE fantastic tone shaping options for the additional money).

For me, the crossgrade has become a no-brainer and makes total sense for anyone. The limitation placed on users with the Line 6 edition is WAY too restrictive when you get to the point where you want to start using other modelers and you don't want to always have to carry around a TonePort or GuitarPort as an interface. I know the L6 version is cheaper...but as stated, just the fact that you get Amplitude Live 2 with the crossgrade makes it worth the price for everyone.

Check it out...you won't be disappointed.

Yeah good stuff. I will just add that if someone owns only a guitarport, it's a good idea to upgrade because of the free Amplitube 2 Live. I like Gearbox better for most everything because I'm used to it, but Amplitube has a nice Bass Amp and a handful of useable bass presets scattered throughout the different preset catagories.

One thing to note, maybe not important if this type of drummer is not your scene, I had a couple of tracks with "Trash Funk" Instant Drummer on. When I loaded them into RiffWorks STD.......no drums !!!
Looks like you only get this drummer and one, maybe two, others with Line6 RW, apart from this I reckon it'll be the best $69 anyone ever spent on recording software. With both plugged into USB ports I can now switch between a mic setting on Toneport to a guitar setting on my Pod with the Audio button on RW, drink a cuppa tea and smoke a cigarette all at once !!!!

(as long as my missus don't see me smokin' indoors)

Hi aray69, how did you get the GNX 3000 to work with the standard edition. I cross graded to standard but it locks up when I try to use the gnx. Just says changing audio device and nothing happens. I have had to reinstall it 4 times just to get it to work with the tone port again, you can't even close it down after you try to connect the GNX, just uninstall it.

Thanks, Ron

You shouldn't need to uninstall if the program locks up though. Just shut it down with the task manager and unplug your USB device and reattach it.

Did that first and then rifftracker refused to open, said no device connected even though both Toneport and Guitar port were still on and connected. Only way it would open is to reconnect the gnx...it would open but still in a locked up state trying to change audio device. Only way to get it to work at all was to reinstall. I should not have to uninstall line 6 version should I?

There is a registry edit that by default is trying to load the last device, the GNX. I cant remember how to delete it but one of the Sonoma guys can point it out. I would just hate to go through all the re-installing and activating for no reason.

Can someone chime in here?

To get unstuck, try this:
>Go to Start->Run
>Type "regedit"
>Go to folder HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareSonoma WireWorksRiffWorksStandard
>Delete "DeviceName"
Cheers!

I have to agree with this topic....I think cross grading was the best move I ever made when RW Standard was released. And that is all I have to say about that.

Sorry it took me a while to respond to the GNX question.

When I activate RiffWorks, depending on which device I was using when I last exited, I may have to go down into the lower right hand corner and click the Audio Setup tab to select the DigiTech USB input...but that's all I need to do and it works.

The one thing I will say is this...for whatever reason, when using the GNX3K, RiffWorks moves very S-L-O-W when getting everything ready to go. Once it recognizes the device and loads it up, you're all set...but it does take the program a LONG while to load that driver for some reason. There were a few times where it took so long that I though the program had locked up...but it hadn't. It eventually loads just fine every time.

Give it a shot again and just let it sit for longer than you normally would when switching devices...I'll bet it will load up for you...it will just take a while. Like I said, more than once, I thought I was locked up, but it did eventually come around.

Thanks aray69, I wil try again, your right it seemed like it was locked up, but when I went to task manager it was wtill running instead of not responding.. Guess I may have been a bit impatient. Will let you know what happens.

BTW Sonoma's support has been great, I emailed them the drummers I had bought with the line 6 version and they added them all to my account to download for free and they work great with the standard version. They also emailed me about the GNX problem and said to try it with out the tone port or guitar port connected.

GREAT SERVICE and SUPPORT SONOMA!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Ron

Is there a way to import completed tunes from the Line 6 version of Riffworks into Riffworks standard? I have a number of songs recorded in the Line 6 version I would like to tweak in the Standard version. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jim

They open in either version. I have both and it doesn't matter which version they open in.

It stands to reason the songs would open in both versions. My problem is when I open Riffworks Standard, and click the link to open a song, the only tunes available in the library are the songs I have recorded in Riffworks Standard. The others, from Riffworks Line 6 version, do not show. I know there has to be a way to bring them from Line 6 RW to RW Standard. That is the problem I am trying to overcome.
