Hey guys,
I am new to the forum, but I recently performed the crossgrade from the L6 Edition of RiffWorks to the Standard Edition...and I can tell you that it is worth EVERY penny of the $69 if you have gear other than Line 6 stuff that you wish to record.
Prior to the crossgrade, I had to have my TonePort hooked up to the computer, and from there I could run my other (non-Line 6) modelers into RiffWorks by plugging them into the line inputs on the TonePort. This wasn't really a problem as much as an inconvenience. It worked just fine by by-passing the amp/cab sims in Gearbox (very little coloration of tone in bypass mode), and I was perfectly happy with that set up...until l I forgot to bring my TonePort to a jam session a few weeks ago. I had my POD XT Live with me, but since RiffWorks was tied to the TonePort, I couldn't use the XT Live to record with RiffWorks. I couldn't even perform the license key transfer with L6 Monkey because I didn't have the TonePort with me (in order to perform a transfer you have to have a computer with internet access, L Monkey, and BOTH pieces of gear...the device that the license keys are coming from and the device that they are going to).
One of the other guys at the jam, however, had the Standard Version of RiffWorks, and I was able to plug into his system with not only my POD XT Live, but his DigiTech GNX3000...not to mention the wonderful Amplitube Live 2 Program that comes with the Standard Version. Amplitube Live 2 is not NEARLY as flexible and feature laden as Gearbox...but you can still get some remarkably outstanding tones out of it.
So...I started thinking about how nice it would be to not HAVE to have my TonePort in order to connect non-Line 6 gear to RiffWorks...and I decided to go for the crossgrade. It has been wonderful. The flexibility of being able to connect ANY ASIO supported gear (DigiTech GNX3000, Zoom G2.1U, Zoom A2.1U...not just Line 6 gear) in addition to being able to use Amplitube Live 2...and (probably the biggest advantage) not having to transfer license keys if I want to be able to use my PODxt, or PODxt Live WITHOUT having to put the TonePort in between them has been an ENORMOUS advantage.
The bottom line is this...if you have the Line 6 Edition of RiffWorks, but you also have other modeling gear that you would like to use with RiffWorks, the $69 crossgrade is worth its weight in gold!!!! If all you have is one piece of Line 6 gear and nothing else...then it probably won't make much of a difference to you (although the addition of Amplitube Live 2 really justifies the $69 price-tag all by itself even if you are a Line 6 user with only one piece of L6 gear...Amplitube just gives you even MORE fantastic tone shaping options for the additional money).
For me, the crossgrade has become a no-brainer and makes total sense for anyone. The limitation placed on users with the Line 6 edition is WAY too restrictive when you get to the point where you want to start using other modelers and you don't want to always have to carry around a TonePort or GuitarPort as an interface. I know the L6 version is cheaper...but as stated, just the fact that you get Amplitude Live 2 with the crossgrade makes it worth the price for everyone.
Check it out...you won't be disappointed.
