If I recall correctly, I used to be able to load a recorded riff into RWS, listen to it, and tweak it without connecting to a device (e.g., GP, PODxt). Now when I attempt to do so, there is no sound. When I check my audio setup, it looks like this:

Note that the "Output Channel" window is completely blank. Also, OS is Vista Home Premium

Were you using your soundcard's ASIO (i.e. the Creative shown) before, or ASIO4ALLv2? Are there any other choices under "ASIO Device"?

Are you actually able to use the Creative ASIO? I have never been able to, it always crashes. I know it works for Scott.

Well, both of you are asking the right questions and drawings the right conclusions.

The problem seems to be related to the monitors. The Tascam’s work well but now I can’t choose simply to listen to a recording through RWS and my computer sound system. In other words, I must connect the PODxt and listen through the monitors, which are connected to the PODxt – no other options.

I don't know if it will work with your machine or with vista (it seems to be a 50/50 split between success and failure) but try http://www.asio4all.com/ if it works you'll have a device in your control panel that will allow you to playback out of your PC sound card.

Thanks gator! So far, it is working like dream and the beta version is designed for Vista. :)

I use ASIO4ALL and it works great. There may be a timing issue with the riffworks effects when using it, for time based effects like delay chorus etc. I seem to remember one of the SWW guys saying that latency is not reported as accurate with ASIO4ALL that's why it's not in the supported driver list.

Anyways, if it works, it works.

The ideal solution would be to use your internal soundcard's ASIO driver, Creative ASIO. But it doesnt work for me. That's one of the reasons I have the Toneport as soundcard now, I use it with my monitors connected to it as my soundcard. It's highly inconvenient to use the PODxtl this way. With that little volume knob on the back and all.

How do you like your Tascam monitors? I'm using a pair of their passive monitors and they are alright, but I think I'm ready for an upgrade.

Unforunately and as with you, my Creative ASIO crashes the program.

I have the Tascam VL-X5 Bi-Amplified Nearfield Studio Monitors and like them a lot. My limited experience is supported by positive product reviews.

After a discussion with an engineer, I'm posting this follow-up with more info as to why the Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS card is not supported by RiffWorks:

RiffWorks is fixed at 44.1 kHz, but this card does not support this in its ASIO driver.
See this review by Sound on Sound where they mention the problem with this Creative card:

"If, like a sizeable proportion of musicians, you want to work at 24-bit/44.1kHz or even 16-bit/44.1kHz, you don't get ASIO support, and existing 44.1kHz files will either generate error messages or play back at the wrong pitch and tempo, while multitrack 44.1kHz demo songs will emerge out of sync." Review online: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct03/articles/audigy.htm

RiffWorks works great with the StealthPlug and TonePort GX devices which cost less than $100 and give you killer amp modeling as well. RiffWorks Recommended Hardware list: http://www.sonomawireworks.com/guide/index.php/Recommended_Hardware

Cheers,
Michelle

Michelle thanks for the information about the Creative ASIO and Audigy 2ZS. I've always wondered why it never worked for me. It seems Creative could improve this driver if they wanted.
