This has been going on for a while. I don't even know how many times but I'm gonna guess hundreds. I really wish they could put a stop to it once and for all. It's bad for business. I would think a simple confirm email to post on the forum would solve it, but who knows, I'm not an admin. I just hate the spam.

Tim, Bill and I really do try our best to bin these posts asap and I reckon we manage to get a big percentage of them before anyone views them. The trouble is that a lot of the junk comes from eastern Europe which is in a timezone ahead of all of us, so a small percentage of the spam sits on the forum until our daytime starts.
The posts with hyperlinks are bad enough, it's the ones with images that annoy me, and I'm sure anyone else with kids in house.
I know the 3Ds are working on the problem but until they come up with something, the three of us 'Spamateers' will try to keep the place as junk-free as possible. In the meantime your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Scott, (on behalf of Tim & Bill too)
Cheers!
Scott

Yeah, it's a big time pain in the butt, I usually zap anywhere between 3 and 12 spam posts every day starting from about 7am and I wish I had a way to completely zap each and every spammer rather than just the posts. It does seem they use time limited email addresses so even removing them as members etc is probably futile and the the best we'll get is a clean up job.

Having said all this, everybody, particularly Scotty and Timbo, please be aware I'll have to break all my stuff down to move over to the good old US of A in about 4 weeks so my spam busting will be limited if not zero for a while.

On another note, I was unaware that Scotty was wearing a support at this time and hope that the swelling soon goes down !!!!

Possibly true, I actually thought it was a slightly longer word with a slightly different spelling

I'm sure any input from you computer guys out there would be greatly appreciated by Sonoma. All Tim, Scott and I really do is the simple task of removing the crap, other than that I think the only other thing we can do is inform Sonoma so they can remove the offending username. Maybe the criteria for getting a username should be more complex, I don't know if that would make any difference ?

P.S. I have removed 6 spam posts so far today, I'd be interested to see what a daily total was.

I belong to a few other forums and none of them have this spam problem...at least it never makes it into the threads. There has to be a fix.

When I was running my little forum site a while back this was exactly why I shut it down. All I was doing was logging in to delete spam.....several times a day.

I think the best and only way to remedy it is to have the accounts approved by a moderator prior to allowing them to post as compared to end user authentification. That way you can check emails and urls to ensure the account is legit. It may still allow some in.....but what can you do.

The downside is the account may take say 24hrs to be approved by a mod......which again is not a big deal in my mind. Just a thought.......

Yeah Shred, I was thinking something along those lines. Most of these assholes seem to have a -11hrs or -12hrs timezone and they all seem to be using spurious, time limited email addresses so I don't think dealing with an email address alone will make a great deal of difference. Maybe we should all have to apply for a Sonoma email address or something ?

best would be to put a porn filter when posting to a new thread,
if suspicious. the message can be flagged off until a moderator okay's it.
Most common words etc can surely be tracked. Most likely it's a script posting on the forums.

I wouldn't mind having and small magic image confirmation thing where you have to type the code displayed in the image (good for creating a new post , for replying to a post it would get annoying).

Image confirmation for registrations, that's the way to go. To my knowledge the bots haven't found a way to beat that, though I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later. The harder we try to filter stupid people's advertising messages, the harder they will work to force it down our throats.

It's not Easy to beat the image code confirmation thing.
As for that you have to write an OCR/CCR (Recorgnition system to get the text entries out of an image). and tackle so many variables like the fonts used and other things in an image.

If someone does manage to go through all that and get to the code and posts the the forums, then they deserve the credit for being dumb enough to be still posting to forums for porn and stuff , than to be selling their technology and making serious money. :)
