i tried taking the xlr cable from my amp mic to a xlr-to-1/4" converter then into the guitarport(line6 version),but i got crap thin gain sounds (i'm assuming that was because i had a low impedance singal going into the high imp input.) SO, is there any way to get the xlr into my laptop without having to put it throught the guitarport? (i know that the GP must be plugged IN). would firrworks recognize it if i got an xlr to usb cable?

Not going to work, the Line6 edition is tied to the Guitarport's input. What you really need is to ditch the Guitarport for a Toneport with the proper XLR inputs. If you are into micing amps and acoustic instruments, then I think you will find the Toneport most excellent. The included pre-amp consoles are fantastic for fine tuning the sound coming from your mic, and the latency is near zero with the Tone Direct monitoring.

When I mic my amp, I monitor the recorded signal through cans connected to the Toneport while playing, so it's super easy to find the sweet spots quickly while moving the mic and such.

Which amp is it?

DefLep if you went to a USB interface for the mic the Line6 version would not recognize it, you'd have to upgrade to the RW Standard version. You could use a small mixer in between, one that would take XLR in and spit unbalanced out to the GuitarPort. If that's all you are doing with it there's some pretty cheap ones out there and you'd have better control over the input as well.

Also, I don't know if the sound might have something to do with how you are micing the amp itself. Placement and setup is critical of course. I would hope the XLR to 1/4" has an impedance transformer in it, but you might check to see if your voice sounds okay through the mic or if that's really weak too.

Hope that helps!

I Mos def agree with our "beloved" Gator............you need an XLR Transformer....... not a Converter.........it's a WORLD of difference! The difference in price is minimal compared to the final result........

I managed this setup through Guitar Port for a short while. Basically I had to use the stomp box AND standard compressors in Gearbox. After having both compressors cranked and the volume and gain adjusted I managed to get by but it was less than desirable.

The TonePort UX1 can be had on eBay for just under 100 bucks and has one XLR input and a separate 1/4 inch. It doesn't have phantom power though so be aware of that! The preamp models alone are worth the price. Having a proper XLR input is really the ticket. 40 or 50 bucks for a good XLR to 1/4 inch transformer and you're already more than half way there towards getting a TonePort!

FWIW the vocals for the demo song were recorded on a cheap dynamic mic through GuitarPort. I still marvel at how they pulled that one off. I'd love to see the setup that was used. Check it out here: http://www.line6.com/rifftracker/sounds.html

thx everyone, i think ill sort try all that^^^^ first ill test the vocals thru the mic, and if thats still weak, then i may just have to get a transformer and upgrade RW. How much does it cost to upgrade to regular RW?

Check this recent thread: http://www.sonomawireworks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=3926

One thing to keep in mind if you decide to use another interface for a mic, make sure it has an ASIO driver (check This Page for recommended hardware devices for RW Standard).

Aren't they offering the RW Standard upgrade from Line 6 version for $29 at a limited time? Check it out! It's on the board here somewhere...
