RiffWorks Recording Software (Mac/Win)

So I just got my Line 6 version guitarport/RW gear. I am figuring out Gearbox pretty well so far but Riffworks is just confusing the hell out of me hehe. I work in the IT field so maybe the "easy" part is escaping me because I am trying to make it harder than it is.
1.No matter what I do when I hit record the instant drummer starts so first, how do I shut that off?

2. How do you all record a "riff" with this? I see that it records for 15sec or so then seems to loop or something and start playing what I was recording before I am even done recording it.
3. I know I can hit record, record the riff and then hit stop but then my "riff" has delays between me hitting record and when I stop playing and go to hit stop again.
4. Once I figure that part out and get some stuff recorded am I able to record my guitar riffs and then add drums after the fact or does it have to be done while recording the guitar?

Ok I know I will have more questions but that will be a good start if anyone can help. Right now it has me so annoyed I am using Audacity to record to just because I know how to use it at least hehe, thanks.

Welcome beersnob! Let me answer directly and then if you have more questions or need pictures just let us know, also give a look at the Riffworks Guide (http://www.sonomawireworks.com/guide/index.php/RiffWorks) when you get a chance.

1.No matter what I do when I hit record the instant drummer starts so first, how do I shut that off?

Click the "Backups" Tab (upper middle of the screen there's Layers, Backups, Riff Effects and RiffLink). Uncheck the Instant Drummer.
2. How do you all record a "riff" with this? I see that it records for 15sec or so then seems to loop or something and start playing what I was recording before I am even done recording it.

RiffWorks will keep looping unless you click "Single Shot Record" on the left part of the screen. That 15 seconds is 8 bars at 120bpm, which you can change on the left side as well by clicking on the tempo or bars and dragging the mouse up or down.
3. I know I can hit record, record the riff and then hit stop but then my "riff" has delays between me hitting record and when I stop playing and go to hit stop again.

Not sure I understand exactly!
4. Once I figure that part out and get some stuff recorded am I able to record my guitar riffs and then add drums after the fact or does it have to be done while recording the guitar?

You can turn the drums on or off, switch them, etc. at any time. Same goes for the metronome and REX files if you use those as well.

I hope that helps you get started!

Hi Beersnob,

To turn off the drummer, hit the 'Backups' button and uncheck the Instant Drummer.
You can vary the length of riff by changing the 'Length (bars)' value to get riffs longer than 15 seconds. You can record with or without the Instan Drummer but without a beat to keep time to, it's not easy. You can therefore turn on/off the metronome.
To give you some 'get ready' time between hitting 'record' and playing, make sure you set the 'Lead in' value to metronome. You can also hit the 'Single shot record' button to stop RiffWorks recording after you've recorded to the end of your riff.
Hope this helps. Anything else ... just yell! ;)

Oops! I see Gator beat me to it ... again!
Cheers!
Scott

Nice, thanks guys appreciate the tips/info. I had found the instant drummer and had unchecked it but I swear everytime I go back and hit record it was there anyway. Will have to check the rest of the settings you all mentioned. Seems like a nice software program I just need to figure some of it out it seems :)

Just in case these two fine gentlemen did not answer your question; I'll give it a shot.
1. If you mean how to give a lead in to record make sure you have one selected in the box right above the Riff Notes box.

2. Yes, Riffworks will continue to loop your whole riff. This is so you can record a few shots in one go and choose the best. To silence your previous takes hit the Auto Mute Layers button right above the Riff Notes box.

3. You'll get that in any program. See above. It loops so you can play a riff over and over till you get it right without having to reset.

4. You can add or change drums after the fact. The only time you will be locked in is if you mix to riff.

Hope that helps.

I recorded several songs in RW before I finally read the manual. It really did help.

I work in the IT world also and I understand the mantra "We don't need no stinking manuals." But trust me it will help.

Looking forward to hearing some of your work.

You'll be hard pressed to find a better forum anywhere on the web. There are some real class acts here.

Also, your screen name is perfect for this community. You'll soon be introduced to the first (and only) rule: the new guy buys the beer!

Thanks guys making more sense now. Managed to record a few main rythm parts (though not to good on my timing yet)
Still a little confused on how to use the drums. Figured out the shut them off part but not really sure how to incorporate them into the music correctly. Do you set tempo ahead of time and they remember the speed?
And if I have some riffs up in the layers area how do I bring them up there and apply them after I figure out some beats I like? Thanks again and reading the guide is helping a good bit though still not getting the drums obviously :)
