I'm wondering how many Riffcasters out there use something other than Instant Drummers or Rex loops from a CD. After having worked with both for almost a year now, I'm starting to see the inherent limitations in both, and want to start programming my own beats. Or at least have more control over my beats than Instant Drummers provide.

I've been looking at EZDrummer, which looks pretty cool as far as ease-of-use goes, but it's a VST plug-in, and I'm using the L6 Edition of Riffworks, so plug-ins are out of the question. I guess what I need is a stand-alone app that outputs REX files that I can use in Riffworks. Is there such an animal?

I think it would be fantastic if riffworks allowed you to save a layer as a rex file, or better yet, record a rex file You could program the drums with a drum machine and create your own!

Recycle from Propellerheads will turn WAV files into REX2 which you could use in RiffWorks.

If you get EZD or one of the other VSTi drum programs (there's many, including some free ones like GTG Drum), you'd need a sequencer to program the beats in MIDI, mixdown the beats to WAV, import them into Recycle, and out as REX2. Or you could use Propellerheads Reason, sequence in there and rewire to RiffWorks.

Reason would be the far easier route (and you could do more than drums, all the synth stuff too!)...unless you want to collab in which case the REX2 route would be more flexible.

FWIW I have EZDrummer and love it but don't use it in RiffWorks as I'm far too lazy!

One other thing you could do is use that free utility for importing WAV files into Riff Layers (the name escapes me but there's a thread here on it), create your drum loops and import them without needing Recycle.

Rewire? what exactly does that mean? I've heard the term used all over the place, but haven't a clue as to what it is or how to do it. How does it work in relation to Riffworks?

Rewire is a technology of sorts that ties the control of one program to another. You bring RiffWorks up and Reason up, tell RiffWorks you want to Rewire to Reason in the Rewire tab, and it plays Reason as well when you hit play in RiffWorks.

You program your drums (or synths) in the Reason sequencer, and they play in the Riff/Riffs you choose along with whatever you record in RiffWorks.

I'm not sure if that made any sense!

I had to try it to understand it, it's actually a very cool thing but hard to explain!

Spam is easy to explain, but not so cool.... :D

I checked out propellerhead's website, and it looks like Reason has some neato funtionality, but I'm wondering about the sounds. Seems like all their examples used hip hop/trance/techno (i.e. non-organic) drum sounds. If I buy anything it will HAVE to have great-sounding acoustic drums.

Glad you got something out of my primer on spam other than a headache Bill ;)

I agree with Gator.....go figure.....I have tried other options including using Reason to program beats and it was pretty cool.....but a lot of work. Nothing is as easy as the ID. There are limiting is some aspects......but save so much time.

Reason is a cool application but the price - ouch! Of course, the real cheap...oops... I mean frugal guy here, ShredRex, owns it.

I believe Reason 4 was just released.

Cheap is OK I don't mind going by that moniker.....lol

But I am only cheap when the purchase is not practical. Reason is amazing stuff......but I see no value in it. I have enough time sucking entities in my life as it is.....lol
