Hello everyone. I am really new, as in a noob, to audio recording. I purchased Riffworks Standard and Stealthplug and installed both on my laptop running Windows XP 5.1. I feel really dumb for asking this, but when I playback a recording or a drum track, I can only hear the sound through the headphone jack of the Stealthplug - I do not get playback from my computer speakers. Is this normal? When I click on the Audio Setup button I get the ASIO setup with only one option for output --- "IK StealthPlug Output 1+IK StealthPlug Output 2"----. I was reading something on the FAQ's about Riffworks being only supported through an ASIO driver as many sound cards that come with computers are poor in quality. Do I need to purchase output monitors to hear the playback without headphones? Once again, sorry for a dumb queston. Thanks for any and all assistance.

You should be able to run your output from your StealthPlug headphone to your line in on your laptop and be able to hear it through whatever speaker system you have for your laptop.

Once you get these things worked out your gonna love RWS. Welcome to the group!

Thanks bluesydude. I was searching somemore on the Forum and found this posted by a member a few months ago. I downloaded it and BINGO! It worked. The jack thing would work also, but I have it on my laptop so I can lay in bed at night and adjust the fine tuning of the riffs without all the gear hooked up.

I have only looked at this forum today, but you guys all seem really helpful. I can't wait to get into this software more this weekend.

Repost from another memember:

You can try out the free ASIO4ALL driver. What it does is add a layer of ASIO to windows drivers, it should work with your internal soundcard and allow you to use it with Riffworks Standard.

http://www.asio4all.com/

V2.6 is the current release, the others are beta. When you first run the program you just need to configure the ins and outs. Then it should show up in your Riffworks audio set up.

Cheers!

I guess I didn't completely understand what you were getting at. But yes the ASIO4ALL driver seems to work for most folks.

I'll be the first to say that you are now a member of the best forum on the web loaded with smart, talented, gifted and witty people that are more than willing to help a fellow caster. And just wait until you discover RiffLink.

Since your in a helpful mood Bluesydude, quick question on something else.

Can I shorten the length on a specific Riff?

Example: I recorded an Intro drum track and like the way it sounds, but it is 12 seconds and I want it to be around 8. Can i shorten the length in the layer function or do I have to delete it and rerecord? I see the 4/4 time signature but I cannot seem to get the track at the exact length I want before I put it into the song. I clicked the info button and can see the wavelengths, but do not see a way to shorten it up.

I looked around on the forum and have not yet found anything about this.

BTW, I read some reviews on Harmony Central about this product and it was glowing. It's not often, after playing for 20 years, that i get all giddy about a guitar product, but this thing is great. In less than a couple of hours out of the box and I have mixed my first song (albeit really sloppy at this point, but hey, I gotta learn-lol)

I don't know of a way to shorten the length of a recorded riff. You can control the number of bars and the tempo. But you can't change the number of bars or tempo after you have recorded layers in the riff. I think a new riff defaults to 8 bars you can shorten that to 4 or 6 or any number of bars you like. Not sure I am much help on this one. But maybe one of the gurus will chime in. Glad you are liking the product and I'm sure that the Sonoma folks, especially Michelle, will be happy to hear about the Harmony Central reviews.

One more helpful hint, when you have different question it is probably best to start a new topic with a subject of like "How to shorten recorded riff" then ask your question. Other wise you run the risk of someone not reading your question because it is buried under another topic. But, if you got a question, ask it. =)

Hi David,

There's no way to shorten a riff once it's been recorded. You'd have to re-record your drum intro with either fewer bars or increase the 'bpm' to get things to a specific time.
It might be possible to use 'IntelliRiffer' to record the drums, export the riff as a .wav. file, use 'Audacity' (free audio converter software) to change the tempo then import the riff back into RiffWorks.
'IntelliRiffer' was developed by one the mighty clever users of RiffWorks to allow it to import .wav files. If you search the forum, you'll see a few threads on it. I haven't used it so I don't know if my suggestion is feasible, let alone if it works.
Welcome to the forum and, like Bluesy says, ask whatever you need to. We're all RW users! :)
Cheers!

Good News For ye All,
It Was really Getting very tedious to achieve riff spltting etc.
and i searched net for any good wave file splitter that could take the tempo and then split the wave into bars of specified length, but couldnt find any. so wrote a tiny utility to do splitting. it's still lil bit buggy and only takes 16 bit 44.1khz stereo wav but as of now working quite good. Of course you will have to use intelliriffer to extract wave file from the riff split it up and pack it back into a usable riff but still better than no option. let me know if anyone wanna give a go at it and i will upload it somewhere and post the link.
