Gain Automation - Sometimes a jagged line, sometimes rounded

RiffWorks Recording Software (Mac/Win)

Strange, most of the time when I draw in gain automation using the "info" button I get the ghosted white overlay and as I start to draw a jagged line appears. Occasionally, I get the ghosted overlay as rounded bars across the riff. When I click on these I am only able to raise and lower the bars. Both of these formats are useful for different situations but I'm entirely confused as to why one mode displays over another. What determines which format displays? Is this a bug?

Anyone else seen this? What's going on here?

Thanks,
Rich

I get that too Rich, I think Riffworks is female and maybe we're supposed to remain permanently confused

Aha! Well, at least now it's clear that it's supposed to be unclear. Helps to know that I'm not supposed to know ;)

I also get that for some reason. Not sure why and why it picks only certain layers.

I think the bars only happen on short riffs. I don't remember the length that it changes from bars to normal though.

You might be onto something here Rob...Sonoma, care to respond? Is this a feature of RW or a bug of some sort?

Thanks,

I believe it's less than 8 bars you get the "bars" and greater than you get the line. It's by design though, not a bug...I just think it has to do with the resolution of the tool.

Per Dug back last year,
Our gain automation is beat sync'd, just like everything else in RiffWorks. We decided to do that for a couple reasons. The main one is that you can perfectly punch in and punch out different layers since their automation points are the same. In case you're wondering, we tried different beat syncings and 8th note seemed to work the best. The reason we show blocks at the lower bar count is so you can see the automation points more clearly. That said, we don't just immediately change the volume, we smooth across the points on a sample by sample basis. You should see those block or line values as targets for the eigth notes with everything in between being interpolated sample by sample.

It would be nice to have a choice. I actually think the "bars" are easier to tweak and easier to match “layer with layer” within a riff when creating a fade.

The Resolution is fixed to 2 Nodes / Beat ie. 8 Nodes / Bar (for 4/4)

I came across this when coding intelliRiffer.

Perhaps resolution could have been a lil bit more, perhaps 4 or 8 per beat would have been much better but again as riff length grows so does this automation data and more data to keep track of and considering many layers per riff they might have a valid reason for keeping it at what it is for performance compromise.

Amit

So, how short does the riff have to be in order to get the bars to show up? I wish there was an option to select one or the other for every riff. There are times when both are suitable to a situation. Anyway, thanks for clearing this up guys. It makes more sense now...
