Dude, that is a lot more than 2 cents. Kudos and thanks for taking the time.

Thanks guys, it's the least I can do for the help I have been given here in a few short days..

Dave.

That is good advice Dave, especially regarding services that are running in the background. Seems like when you install just about any app these days, it automatically sets itself to start when Windows starts, and turning off that feature can be difficult (almost impossible in the case of evil apps like QuickTime).

Here's what I'd do - hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and bring up the Task Manager to see what programs are running. There may be a few that you don't recognize. Just Google those and you should be able to finger out what they are. Windows has a few system processes with cryptic names, but you don't want to turn those off!

After you finger out what you want and what you don't, I use a program called Startup Inspector for Windows (I don't remember the URL, you can Google it though, it's free) to choose which programs run at startup. I find it's easier than opening the offending program and telling it not to run at startup (which rarely seems to work anyway). That will give you a nice clean slate at startup.

Just wanted to add that the songbar bug does not seem to have anything to do with the performance of the machine. It generally happens when you have been recording in the song layers and switch to layer view and starting playback from a spot in the middle of the song. I can replicate this very easily. Sorry I didn't mention before, but I don't use the song layers that much due to the non-looping recording in it.

Hey thanks so much for the machine advice....I am noting everything.

Ok here is what I have found...

The external drive made no difference.

However when I play the individual riff's from the riff bar they run smooth a silk and CPU usage is normal.

When I play the same riff in the song bar the CPU goes to 100% and the system freezes. Page File Usage is at about 921megs when the system freezes up.

I also tried taking a problem riff out of the song bar and placing it back in. The first playback after doing that was good...the second froze the system up again.

So why would the riffs play fine on there own form the riff bar, but not when placed in the song bar???

Your thoughts...

Next I will take all of the effects off of the layers and see what that does....

You guys ROCK as always!!!!

Cheers,
Chip

Problem solved....well sort of....

I made a copy of the file and took off all of the effects.....it ran just fine.
CPU usage with out effects was still 80 - 100% but the song generally played ok.
So I know the effects are maxing out my CPU.

I guess I either upgrade to a better CPU which will mean a new laptop or desktop
or learn to get better source sound without adding EQ and Compression...LOL

Actually I guess I could us the laptop for mobile recording and mix on a desktop machine with a dual core processor, 2gig of RAM etc...

At least I feel a little better knowing what the issue is....

Hey guys thank you so much for your input this was an interesting process...

Now I can get back to recording my next RW CD!!!!

Cheers,
Chip

These are the mystery bugs from HELL!
If anyone knew what caused these glitches, the Sonoma team would have them fixed.
Everyone is experiencing them, no matter how much memory and processor speed, no matter what hard drive! I changed the strings on my guitar and the problems disappeared for a couple hours! Who knows? Maybe its something way outside the box. Drinking lots of beer helps too, just re-boot Riffworks every time you go to the refridgerator....
