That is good advice Dave, especially regarding services that are running in the background. Seems like when you install just about any app these days, it automatically sets itself to start when Windows starts, and turning off that feature can be difficult (almost impossible in the case of evil apps like QuickTime).
Here's what I'd do - hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and bring up the Task Manager to see what programs are running. There may be a few that you don't recognize. Just Google those and you should be able to finger out what they are. Windows has a few system processes with cryptic names, but you don't want to turn those off!
After you finger out what you want and what you don't, I use a program called Startup Inspector for Windows (I don't remember the URL, you can Google it though, it's free) to choose which programs run at startup. I find it's easier than opening the offending program and telling it not to run at startup (which rarely seems to work anyway). That will give you a nice clean slate at startup.
