Hi team

I have discovered the source of RW crashing on my machine. When viewing the error log RW creates when it crashes, I saw that RW seeks out the internet as it starts on various ports, possiibly for license validation or similar. The crash happens right after that in the log. Acting on a hunch, by unplugging my network cable, RW starts cleanly every time. As soon as I plug the cable back in, RW crashes every time. I am using all the latest network drivers etc, have no anti-virus or anti-malware scanners/services running and only have a router and cable modem on my network.

Hopefully Sonoma will be able to track down why this is happening, and if others reading this that have experienced similar 'unhandled exception/bad meta data/memory reference' errors starting RW under Vista could try unplugging their network to see if that makes a difference, we might be onto something.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

It's possible that Vista is blocking RW from accesing the internet. See if you can look into Vistas Firewall or your NIC card to enable the program access to the internet.

Hi Dave,

Do you mind posting the contents of the RiffWorks.log file here? Make sure you launch RW with the cable plugged in, let it crash and then get the log results.

Thanks!

No worries, here's the log. I have highlighted the error by leaving a gap between the lines.

I also have screen caps of the main error dialogs here:

www.pcanytime.co.nz/error.jpg

www.pcanytime.co.nz/error2.jpg

When I start up, the main window opens but I get the first 'bad meta data' error dialog (error 1). Once I clear that error, RW tells me an unexpected error has occurred and asks if I want to save my files. I click OK, then another dialog asks if I want to save 'untitled'. I click no or cancel and then get the main runtime error dialog (error 2). This happens 100% of the time. If I unplug my network cable from my computer, it opens 100% of the time error free. If I unplug my cable modem (leaving my local network intact), the software also opens 100% of the time, so it has something to do with being able to connect to the internet. If it can connect, it crashes, if not, it doesn't.

@Muddhole

The firewall neither reports it trying to get through (which it does for other programs) nor stops it. I added the program to the exclusion list and still no difference. Even if I disable the firewall completely RW still crashes. The log shows success in connecting to the server as well before the crash so it appears to be going through the firewall anyway. Good ideas though, thanks for your input, (love your sound by the way, crunch with bite).

Sorry for the huge post.

Great news! The beta release (not public yet) fixed his problem and he's able to launch RiffWorks with his network cable plugged in.

Yep, and then the balloon popped and now I'm not able to. If I disable my network connection RW does launch, and runs quite happly when the connection is enabled again; it is just during launch that it faults with the connection active.

Bummer.

Ok I just did a stupid decision of buying the software. I can't register because of this internet connection issue. So I only have 30days to go before this whole software goes dud in my PC. I can't even use the free drummers cause I can't register and activate. Help... Sonoma!!!

I wan't my money back if this is not resolved within a month.

Here is my new log file using Riffworks Standard:

Hi Olineil,

We are sorry for your frustration!

You emailed support back in December and Randy responded that the engineers were looking into the issue, but we didn't have enough information about the problem at that point. As you can see from Davenz's post above, he is part of the beta and mentioned that we are actively seeking a solution to this problem.

Your second support case was opened today. You said in your post above, "i've been waiting for this to get fixed and nobody from sonoma even bothered to address this issue."

We are trying to fix this bug. You are the second person that has sent us a log file that would help us figure it out. Davenz has been helping to test possible solutions but we haven't got it working for him yet. We always try to get RiffWorks working for anyone that it is broken for. But there isn't always an obvious fix. We're doing our best!

cheers,
dug

Hi oliniel

You won't regret buying the software - it is really very good despite a few niggling issues.

While my copy of RW also crashes on start when connected, I can work around it. Usually I try opening it as normal, about nine out of ten times RW crashes, but sometimes it opens OK. If it does crash, then I temporarily disable my network connection and re-enable it once RW is up and running.

Updates are the biggest problem. I can wait until that odd time it starts normally but I found another way. How I do it is by causing Riffworks to crash, then the next time it runs I get the 'do you want to recover your song' dialog. I discovered that on my machine RW never crashes on start with the network connected when an 'out-of-the-ordinary' startup dialog is displayed, whether that be the 'recover your song' message or EULA message (which pops up the first time RW is restarted after an update). In these cases RW starts happily 100% of the time. The trick is finding a way to crash RW on your machine so it will invoke the dialogs next time you start it.

On mine, I can crash it sometimes by clicking quickly around the backups/Instant Drummer selection dialogs, sometimes by logging into Rifflink and then logging out - often I get a crash with a 'file format invalid' message. Either way I do it, the next time RW starts, it will do so without gagging and if an update is available RW will prompt you to download it. It is also at this point that you may be able to register RW.

It's a bummer I know but we just have to be patient. The support is very good here and I know the team are looking into these issues. The support address is support@sonomawireworks.com so I suggest you flick them an email directly and they should help get you up and running.

Dave.

Don't give up olineil! I know first hand that's it's frustrating to buy something and not have it work at 100% right out of the box as advertised, but support here at Sonoma is top-notch. I myself had a few problems getting Riffworks to run when I first bought it two years ago, although that was due to my own stupidity and not a software bug. Still, Sonoma support was right there and got my problem solved quickly. This is a little different situation, as there is no "Just Make It Work" button that Sonoma can push.

The one thing I can tell you is hang in there! Once you get everything running, you'll wonder how you ever wrote songs without Riffworks.

Thanks guys...

Sorry for the bit of sarcasm... I'll try to extend my patience more. Please do let me know what other infos the tech team needs from me to assist in arresting the issue.

Thanks for the quick reply by the way.
