When I use gear box alone the driver is operating at 16 bit. When I launch riffworks I get a loud pop and the driver changes to 24 bit. I can set the default to 16 bit and wont get the pop but it sounds better in 24 bit. Why cant I get the driver to stay in 24 bit? or is this normal?

I think I need to be a bit more clear. I'm using a line 6 tone port UX1 on a laptop with vista home premium recording with riffworks line 6 edition.
I am turning here for some help after trying and getting no help from line 6. This is not a riffworks problem as it is woking great.
The answer I get from line 6 is (we do not support vista)
Anyway
If anyone else is running gearbox on a vista 32 bit system I want to know if your system is acting like mine.
With gear box not running I go to control panel, then open audio-midi devices, under the driver tab on the left side it says driver activating at (inactive) as it should because nothing is running.
Under that there is a message that says the default sample rate and bit depth are set in the sound control panel. This is where the problem is as I can set the defaults there but they get ignored and run where they want to.
Line 6 says I should be able to set the defaults there and lock them there using the lock driver box.
Only I dont have that box there at all instead I have the message (set defaults in the sound control panel) that does not work.
On the right under the driver tab I can set the default sample rate and bit depth when set to 16 bit it will stay there if I set it to 24 bit where I want it it wont stay there.
So what happens is one day I will be recording in 16 bit and 24 the next so when I try and create a song and play it back it doesn't sound rite.
I know this is not a riffworks problem but I need some help and line 6 does not want to help me.

Howdy
I am running Vista 32 bit with Gearbox and a Toneport UX2.
I do not have a 'lock' drivers checkbox in my Sounds options anywhere, or under the 'Line 6 Audio-Midi Devices' applet, so I don't know where they are getting that from.
I leave mine set at 16 bit because it doesn't really sound that much better in 24 bit and you may find your machine struggling at that kind of sample rate once you get a layer or two going.
I haven't played around much with bit-rates as my machine doesn't like 24 bit at all (even though it is a pretty high-spec machine) so I leave it set at 16 bit and a 256mb Buffer (and set on extra small in the Line 6 setup).
Dave.
