Need powered monitor advise. I don't have crap for room so they gotta be small. I really don't need a load speaker. And of coarse cheap!. Just need some clarity. Right now i got 2.1 creative. As you all know this really doesn't cut it . So i've been checking out these m audio av 20 for $100. I love the size nice and small. Any other recommendations or what i should stay away from?

I went to guitar center to get some budget monitors and acually found someone helpfull. I demoed all the different monitors they had even the ones way higher price than I was willing to pay just to see how they sounded. I went in mostly interested in the KRK rockets they looked like the best deal. I walked away with the new mackie MR5 monitors for 150 a piece and got him to throw in the cabels I needed. Doing an A-B comparison was the best thing I'v done. To my ears the MR5's sounded way way better than any others they had in the store they were the only budget monitors with any bass at all and they sounded cleaner also. I thought they sounded better than some of the monitors that were twice the price. I really wanted to get the MR8s but it was a bit out of my budget. My advice is to go and listen to what they sound like before buying I'm glad I did. I hated the way the KRK rockets sounded.

Both Mackies and KRK's havebeen on sale at MF for a week or three now.
I've bought KRK RP5 and RP6. The new budget mackie looked intriguing, I have not tried them. I bought RP5s and RP6s unheard based upon a fairly trused recommendation. I see reviews have had issues with the KRKs' crossover effecting the lower mids, right where the guitar needs to have its best mix, so I may not have the best for me. I was thinking Mackies 824 or 624s, but the cost swayed me away for now as I usually mix with a couple brands of headphones anyways. (even tho that is typically 'not recommended'.

I have had the RP5's (with the 10" sub) for the last couple years. They were my first monitors and I can tell you the sound was unimpressive when I got them home. But what I discovered is when I mix on them, the mixes translated well...which is why you buy monitors! I also found that acoustic treatment added at least as much bang for the buck as the monitors themselves did.

I think most any monitor you get is going to make an improvement in the final results. At the lower end with an untreated room, don't expect miracles though. And, you can always trade up through Ebay as you go!
