Hey guys

Does anyone know how to lay vocals across the top of a song, rather than in separate riffs?

I'm trying to lay a floating vocal that goes across verses and choruses and don't know how to do it other than cutting it up into the separate riff layers. The problem with that is the vocals get chopped as the song progresses from riff to riff.

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Cheers

You can record you vocals in what's called the Songlayers. Do can do up to about 20 takes or so I think, so it layers just like any other riff, but runs over the length of the sone. To the left of where it says Songlayers just click the button, hit record and you are away. But make sure you have the riffs in the right order before you start.

Songlayers were designed for this exact purpose but they do have that one drawback...if you change the order of riffs on the song timeline then your "songlayer" will not match up.

Songlayers can be tricky to figure out at first but they are essential to non-linear recording so take the time to learn how they work.

Here's an explanation from the guide on songlayers: http://www.sonomawireworks.com/guide/index.php/SongLayers

Here's a video from Gator which may also help:

Another way to do this is to set the current riff so that it will record the vocal take as part of another riff (the one that you intend to use before the current one). Whatever riff you tell Riffworks to use will be it's "lead in". This way, whatever is recorded will be added to the tail end of the set up or lead in riff as well as recorded on your current riff. The result of these two riffs if they are placed in order on the song timeline will be a smooth or "floating" vocal take that spans both riffs :)
