Hello,

I've not even started trying this, before I waste some time on a project doomed to fail anyway.

My band keyboarder has a Mac OS, whereas I use Win XP on my PC. I got a Line 6 UX2 Toneport and have recorded all I can to my Win Riffworks. Can I pass the Toneport to him, download a Mac version of Riffworks (which is available to me, though I didn't need it), let him record and then take back my Toneport as well as the .rws files?

rhyno,
I just recently moved an .rws file from Mac to Winders and it played with no problem. Can't say the same for Line6 box, but I don't see why you couldn't. So, apparently, .rws isn't too particular about the OS.

IMHO What you are talking about is not an impossibility at all but I doubt that Sonoma would do other than frown on it as you would be admitting to using one purchased copy of Riffworks with one username/password/account between two separate users. Somewhat unethical methinks :)

If your keyboardist were to visit you with his keyboard and record on your machine or vice-versa, now that's a whole different story I would reckon :)

Ethics? I don't listen to hip-hop.

So it does work but is not right.... great. Can't anybody tell me "Sorry, but the two OS are completely incompatible in this regard." ?
Fact is I don't even want to do that, simply because I don't want to explain Gearbox and Riffworks and then let someone record something when I'm not there to control it, apart from it being illegal / not right. It's not that I want to give him the program or do an online collaboration with the same account (don't know if that's possible), but that's exactly why I asked - to be fair to Sonoma for programming this hell-of-a-cool-program. And there's still the fear of a Mac-Win-war....

Aaw... just imagine that. A guy with wife and kid rather wants to record home alone (or with his family) than to come to me, have a (few) beer(s) and do it right.
Maybe I'll just lie to him. In case someone asks you... this discussion never happened.

RiffWorks runs and works just fine on MAC as well as windows....I've collaberated with a co-worker that bought RiffWorks Standard and recorded both on his Mac and my PC in joint ventures taking the RWS files back and forth on a thumbdrive with no snags whatsoever...........I / we also use the TonePort UX2.... I can't speak for the Line 6 version of Riffworks though.

By the ways..........
What does ethics have to do with Hip-Hop? Just curious :)

I'm pretty sure different users are sending RWS files to each other via yousendit and suchlike with (to the best of my knowledge) no reference to which operating system is being used either end. Maybe somebody with the technical knowhow will chip in with the definitive answer you're looking for :)

The song file itself should be no problem to go between Mac and PC, the question is whether you can have a Line6 PC version and a Line6 Mac version use the same hardware for authorization.

I think the answer is yes, and I don't see any issue with it...the Line6 version's authorization is tied to the hardware, so moving the hardware back and forth should be fine.

rhynoclemmis please try it and let us know!

I just remembered that the keyboarder has all his effects and stuff (I don't know much about that) on his Mac. So actually to record his sounds as they are we really need to connect the UX2 to his Mac. I just can't remember if it comes with a Mac CD too, if my version is Win-only... I'm at work now. But we need to try it anyway, so I'll come back to you once we try it. And I solemnly promise not to leave the Riffworks copy on his puny ibook or whatever that is. After all, I got a position to lose in my band if everyone can do it, haven't I?

@ mickeymix: That was a reference to the South Park movie. I've seen it only in German - there's this scene where all the black people of South Park are put into a regiment for operation "Human Shield", Chef asks the general if he ever heard of human rights and the reply is: "Human rights? I don't listen to hip-hop."

...ok... you can stop calling me Weirdo now.

rhynoclemmis you should be able to download the Mac Line6 version from their website. It won't work once you leave with your UX2, making you a valuable member of the band ;)

I've had the South Park movie sitting on the DVR for months now...I guess I better finally get around to watching it!

Can I put one of those South Park Human Shield gizmos between me and the proverbial fan ? At least I'd keep a bit cleaner that way
