latency, never a factor before...... New sound cards fault?

I just installed a new 100 dollar sound card. I was getting distortion whenever I'd try to pan anything hard left or right and since this is a new computer with better processor, memory, etc, I figured I'd start by changing out the on-board sound.

I got an X-Fi from Creative.

The actual sound itself sounds MUCH better than the on-board 5.1 sound, but now whenever I play a tune in RW, the drums and guitar are off. Sometimes it'll work for a few seconds, but I can't listen to an entire song without tracks getting out of sync.

Is this latency? How should I configure my new card to work with RW and a Pod XT Live? Anyone know of any links that give hints on setting up all your stuff to work well together?

Thanks
Beau

Update. Ok, I've fixed the latency thing. I was apparently using the computer card for something when I should have been using the pod.

However, my problem with distortion persists. Anytime I try to pan anything hard left or hard right in RW the sound for that track gets weak, fuzzy, and distorted.

Any Ideas?

Another update. I'm changing my name to Moron. Well, at least now I have a better sound card. The problem all along was that my cable running from my phones out on the pod to the line in on the soundcard was halfway unplugged!

Those absent spaces aren't as long as you might think Mikey (I say that as I'm realizing you guys wrote this stuff a week ago)! I'm always stopping in to give a listen at riffcaster and quite often will log in to a collab even if I don't have my guitar handy, just to listen to what's goin on.

I AM glad to hear that I'm still considered a junkie! I feel fortunate to have been active with RW when the junkies formed up. It's true, I haven't been very junkie-like lately (work, work, and more work) but I'm still a junkie at heart. And if I could play like Tom, you guys would probably get sick of seeing me logged in anyway!
