I stumbled across another online collaboration tool today.

http://www.digitalmusician.net/index.php?id=381

It's obviously not nearly what RW is in terms of features and whatnot, but it does have two features that RW doesn't currently have. Talkback, and webcam features.

To me, the webcam thing doesn't really make much sense in this application. Yeah, maybe one day when broadband speeds can truly take advantage of it, but for now, I think it would likely just slow everything down.

Talkback, on the other hand, makes alot of sense to me for online collaboration. Firstly, because musicians who are used to working in a traditional studio environment are used to having talkback available to them. Secondly, because it's alot faster than typing!

So anyway, talkback is on my personal wishlist of future features in RW (along with a built-in programmable drum machine along the lines of redrum). I think it would be a very easy and fun way to communicate while working on a collab.

By the way, I didn't download the software mentioned here. As far as I'm concerned, RW is the app for me, and sonoma doesn't seem to be slowing down at all, so my loyalty remains here. Just thought I'd share this with sonoma in case they hadn't seen it. Always helps to keep abreast of what the competition is doing.

"I think the problem might have been, that there was a stonehenge monument on stage in danger of being crushed, by a dwarf". "I really think you're making a big thing out of this". "Making a big thing out of it would have been a good idea".

Yes, talkback is on our mighty list of features we'd like to include as well :-)

There's one hidden right behind the marker on the timeline :)

Since we're mentioning requests, I'd like Riffworks to do my taxes, and mow my lawn.

If you click on the marker going along the songline, it will stop where it's at...in other words pause.

I think it was explained in this thread http://www.sonomawireworks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=5026 though I'm too tired to read through it to be sure. ;)

There's a video here that shows it as well.

What the heck, it's a free app and only a 5 Mb download so I registered and downloaded. I'll give it a workout and give a review. It runs as rewire slave and looks like it is intended to be an add on to regular recording programs, so I'll be trying it with Riffworks.

It also looks a very simple 16 track recorder. With a free account it will stream at 128kbps and has a 50Mb/month limit.

This is the part SWW should look into. You only upload the tracks when you send them. This is a good way to deal with bandwidth issues. If you have 16 takes you only stream the one you want.

Another thing I noticed is the community has a talent listing and right off the bat I was able to locate some real drummers, keyboardists, and vocalists just by browsing through profiles. I heard a couple of real nice tracks that were probably done with high end recording apps via rewire.

It's no Riffworks that's for sure, but has a great potential as an ad on.

When SWW irons out the bugs on RiffLink and adds a few much needed features to RiffWorks I think they will be the clear leader but this concept is going to see competition for certain! That's a good thing. Keeps us all honest ;)

We can actually do that now without Sonoma adding another feature by using a little program called ventrillo. I mentioned this to Sonoma some months back and thought it would be better to actually chat with fellow musicians rather than just type chat.

If Sonoma was willing to host this program on one of their servers, we can install the client on our side and join different rooms. You can have any rooms you want, for example; Lobby (just kick back and shoot the bleep), a Rock room, Jazz room, and any room you can think of.

What say you Sonoma?

As Michelle mentioned TalkBack is on our list. A Ventrilo server could work, but we need to evaluate the impact on our other services bandwidth, etc. Wouldn't want to slow down anything else at the same time. We'll be looking into it.

thanks,

I looked at the site and on the surface it looked very commercial. Making money on your music is no sin of course but I like the open community feel here. I have learned a lot and actually had a load of fun without taking on the burden of if I can make money at this. Even though that would be cool. I tried it 35 years ago. It didn't work then not sure that anything would change now. There have been some tremendous melodies and hooks discovered just by the free form capabilities of RiffLink.

I feel a "Battle of the Bands" coming on and if someone uses that idea I would like to get compensated for it. No wait, that has already been done. Is it possible to be an original in the internet community unless your wedgebill?
