New to this home recording thing. Riffworks seems really awesome but it says it cannot find a ASIO device. Do I just need a sound card with ASIO ? Any recommendations on a cheap one?

Also once I have that sound can I just plug my guitar into my mic input on my PC ( via a big to small jack convertor)

Thanks and sorry for the noob questions, I am a gamer and a bit of a computer geek but have never ever dealt with sound cards, just ram and vid cards ;p

Download asio4all and you can give it a whirl by plugging in the way you said, find it here:-

Have a look at Line6's TonePort device and GearBox software which will act as an input for your guitar and an output for your sound (although you'll need speakers/monitors). The software comes with a huge array of amp models and presets for bass/keyboard/vocals.
Cheers!

True. I'm a fan of a dedicated souncard though. I have a PodXT and don't use it's ASIO because I get better performance from the Terratec EWX2496. An oldie but a goodie in my opinion. But yes, that Toneport deal is sweet.

Just makes things so much simpler ya know.....I too thought about going direct with my soundcard....but it is just too much hassle when you can plug and play with a USB device like that TP.

When drivers from Line6 and Sonoma are proven to be compatible, it makes a lot of sense to use what actually works. My Creative soundcard gave me nothing but trouble so the TonePort would always be my choice.
Cheers!

I still get an error message quite frequently saying that no ASIO device is attached and am invited to purchase a toneport via a popup window. This is despite the fact that I have had a toneport UX2 connected to my PC for 2+ years!
This is a fairly recent issue and I have downloaded the most recent drivers. I also recently crossgraded to standard thinking it was a line6 issue but this is also not the case.
I can often remedy the problem by unplugging and replugging the USB cable, but this is quite a hassle and not exactly an "inspiring" part of the writing/recording process.
Is this a fairly common issue among users, and if so is there a solution?

Ah the dreaded unplug- replug issue. I think it's something we all get. It happens to me a lot and I don't think there is a workaround yet. Not sure if it's a RW problem or a Line6 driver issue. Drives me mad, although if I use the Line6 version of RW I don't need to shut down RW to get the drivers to reload. Just gotta live with it for now I'm afraid.....

I reckon this is a line 6 driver issue; funnily enough, mine no longer does it since the last upgrade; I never have to replug. If only I could bottle the fix and sell it... er, give it away.
