The current release (build) of RiffWorks is crashing constantly, giving me problems. Is there a way to downgrade to a previous version? I hope so!

I think it would be a good idea to keep older versions available for testing and other purposes....

Thanks,
Rich

Rich,

Have you opened a support case? Aside from a few issues affecting a small minority of users, the upgrade is definitely an improvement. I haven't ever been trained to downgrade, but before we even look at that possibility you should see if we can fix your problems.

Thanks,
Garrett

Thanks Garrett! I just sent a support ticket explaining in detail. I posted here to see if others were getting crashes on startup too. Looks like my problem is isolated.

I recently upgraded to a new audio interface, an RME FireFace 800 so, maybe that did it? The old Tascam FW-1082 didn't uninstall cleanly and left files in the Registry and throughout Windows I suspect. That could also be the culprit.

I might just reinstall Windows over the weekend if I don't see improvements. Could be a good time to upgrade to Vista? Anyone had good success with Vista or should I avoid it?

Thx,
Rich

I use Vista and the problems I had with RW I don't believe were Vista related. I don't know why it is hip to rubbish Vista. Sure, like all operatinjg systems, it has some annoying features, but in the most part these can be tweaked out or turned off. Most of the issues I find are related to third-party applications and drivers; if those companies don't update their stuff, thats their (and consequently their users) problem, not Microsoft's. Vista has been around in one form or another now for years; if third-party OEMs can't develop/update a driver in that time, then their users should be complaining to them. After some glitches in the beginning, RW works almost flawlessly on my machine; that said, I am not the most demainding user either and am probably not using it to its full potential.

When you say crashing on start, is that the only issue?

If you know there is stuff left behind in the registry, download and use an application called Regseeker (freeware from Hoverdesk.net) and use the 'search' function to find and remove any rogue entries. Be careful though, like all registry editing apps, you can get into trouble with it. Be aware aw well that just the presence of a registry key or two doesn't cause the major crashes registry cleaner makers claim; in most cases all they do is sit there taking up a few bytes of space; for all intents and purposes, harmelss. Cleaning them will just make the registry a tiny bit leaner and this has no real impact on Windows crashing or not.

I always keep the most stable update of the non standard on a desktop... just in case I run into this very thing.
