I'd like it to have Vista so it can do games with DirectX10 really well. However, I'm wondering if Vista is going to conflict with Riffworks, and if instead maybe i should just go with XP.

So my main question is: does Riffworks 1.0, or the one that came out with Gearbox work with Vista or will i have to update?

I still have my CD installer for Riffworks 1.0, I installed it on my laptop a hundred years ago, this computer, and i'm planning on installing it on the new computer.

Will that work with Vista, or do I have go through all the frustrating trouble of updating, paying again, etc. I updated Riffworks once I believe when Gearbox or w/e came out..I'm just a bit lost in wondering what all i'm going to have to do to make the transfer work considering I have today and tommorrow to set this up before I move out of town, and I'm extremely busy on top of all this.

and will I be able to transfer the Riffworks files (songs/riffs) from my old computer (this one) to my new one? I'd be using a portable hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

The original RiffWorks/RiffCaster 1 does NOT work with Vista. The upgrade is pretty cheap though and brings some nice new functionality with it as well.

The song files will carry forward to a new machine, and work fine to RiffWorks 2. Just drag them over!

So how do I go about installing the new version, do I have to download it from Line 6 or something, and then upgrade, since im assuming i can't use the CD? and what about authorization and all that, i mean i've already payed for all of it once (the update for Gearbox)

If you already updated once, you should have a Line6 account already established with your history, which should include serial & license. I'm not sure what you bought when you upgraded to gearbox but it all should be there on the Line6 site and you'll get what you paid for in the latest edition. Plus you usually can apply that to getting compensated if it is included in a further upgrade or crossgrade should you go that route.

Download the new gearbox & latest monkey, then the trial version of Riffworks. If there is any other cost involved, it will be nominal, under a 100...maybe less depending on what you already have paid for but this should get you working with Vista.

Time wise, download times will take the longest in setting this up IMO. Depending on your connection, if you have cable speeds you should be up and running in a couple hours at the most after all the updates.

Oh, and if you choose to crossgrade, that will take a couple days in most instances as you have to contact support with your system basics (OS etc) build number of RW, the drummers you have installed and they set you up with discount and a code for purchase. I don't believe support answers emails on the weekends.
I think you have to use that code within a certain window of time as well.
