I just learned about Riffworks from reading the Todd Rundgren article in the Oct.08 issue of Guitar Player. Apparently Todd returned from a tour to find his Protools setup wasn`t working. He decided to record his latest album using Riffworks and Reason. He chopped up his guitar and vocal parts which he recorded through a Line 6 Toneport using Reason for backing tracks and Audacity as an audio editor.

I don`t know much about how to combine these programs. I know there will be some new instructional videos coming for Riffworks and so I hope they will include a good tutorial featuring Riffworks with Reason.

I have just downloaded the demo and am going to try Riffworks using my Zoom H4 recorder as a USB stereo Asio interface. The Zoom is an amazingly flexible device and it also has some very good amp simulation and effects onboard.

Looking forward to reading these message boards and learning more about this program.

That is very cool! I think Todd has always been someone who is willing to step out of the box much like Zappa did but in his own way. He was always taking his own route using different methods in sounds, playing, production. His material in Nazz and Rundgrens first Utopia was a influence on me as he was into the whole clapton SG and weird synth guitar sounds, plus he was a rockin player too. His solo on Last of New Age Riders, as well as the tune will always be a fav in my book. What a major plug for Sonoma & Line6! ...as he's hugely establish as a producer, recording engineer, writer and performer.

I had been thinking this yesterday (its sitting on the table) and has got me thinking about it again. I have a Pandora PXR4 which has some great sims and cab models on it that I'd like to try in RW. I always waned to try the Zoom.. be interested in hearing a link should you get something up. Please post it here.

This is really really interesting. His recordings could be an excellent reference material to listen to and compare with regarding sound quality etc for your own stuff done in RW.

Admittedly I am using the demo version of Riffworks (with ZOOM H4 as my ASIO IO) but I am finding the latency to be very problematic. I can record in sync with the instant drummer but on playback my bass parts lag dramatically behind the drums. I have adjusted the latency times in the audio setup but it doesn't seem to help. Pretty frustrating as a professional bassist to find that my time sense has gone out the window.

The Zoom doesn't use the same approach as the Line 6 Toneport but it is a quality ASIO interface. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions that I haven't tried?

Sorry, I use Guitarport and I've not tried the Zoom so I'm afraid I can't be much help. It does sound strange, however, that you are synched when recording but getting latency on playback. I'm not a techy, but I wasn't sure that could happen. They'll be other guys on here that will be able to offer some suggestions though. I do know that with the Line6 products, with Gearbox, you get no latency, although I do with Amplitube through the same I/O device.

Hi Saracen,

What buffer size do you have your Interface device set to? Open RiffWorks, click on the AUDIO SETUP button. Click the Open ASIO control panel and set the buffer to 256 samples/frames.

Let us know if that improves the latency you've been having,
Randy
