greetings,i'm a new user and i have to say i love this place! i've played around with it, cast a couple of riffs and even tried collaborating, and now i am curious about how you go about doing a vocal over a riff?
i'm fairly sure [without having actually tried] that the onboard mike in my dell inspiron 1525 laptop wouldn't produce stunning results,so, what type of microphone would be best to use, and how to set it up?

Hey freetime.

Yeah you can be pretty sure that any onboard mic on a PC is gonna pretty much suck. You'll want to buy an external mic. As far as which one to buy, well everyone has a different opinion there. I'd say count on spending at least $60 to get a decent quality vocal mic. Of course, you can't go wrong with an SM57.

Other things to think about too - a small mic stand or mount for your desk (you don't really want to hold it while you sing), and what kind of hardware you're using to get the signal into the computer (GuitarPort, TonePort, Stealth Plug, etc). For instance my GuitarPort only has a 1/4" input so I can't use a mic with a regular 3-prong mic plug.

As far as what to do once you have the mic hooked up - I use GearBox for all my tones, and the mic preamp models work well for recording vocals.

Hi Freetime, which ASIO interface device are you using? Does it have 48V phantom power or a dedicated mic input? If it just has a instrument input, then you'll need to get an impedance mic cable with a male 1/4" plug. Like this:
