Does anyone use Gear Box or Amplitude for heavy guitars...?

Watcha chaps.

Well after some easy chillin' 12-string work i am back onto some hard riffs again and i was wondering if anyone actually used GearBox Amp models or Amplitude for the compositions when recording in Riffworks?

I have tried Amplitude Plugin. It looks very nice but sadly its just too slow on my machine. There is a playing delay of about half a second which i just cannot get on with.

Gearbox on the other hand has no latency at all and save perhaps it being a little harder to pull off those squealy harmonics - i can play normally and get some pleasing sounds with zero interference or background noise.

So my question is this. There are some *really* good recordings on Riffworld and in the riff rumbles so i was wondering how people here capture a decent rock/metal guitar sound?

Do you all use the dual condenser method in front of an amp or have people managed to get the sound they wanted using gearbox and/or other Amp models?

I would be interest in anything anyone has to offer on this.

Thanks in advance.
Alex.

i use gb for all the tunes i've played so far. i've had a tough time using my amp to record, i don't have the room to do it properly or the amp type. (have to use headphone jack) not too good.
the ac-30 top boost is my fav amp for the strat, in gb.
i do use my flanger sometimes tho, it is better and i can turn off/on in the middle of a riff.

my bassamp is easier to use since i can run the head into gb and use the effects and cabs there.
the amplitude i got with rw i hardly ever use.

for what i play gb is fine in terms of heavy. the pod farm looks more promising for all around tones that, i think, sound more accurate.

All my stuff is done only with Gearbox....I've tried Amplitube, but can't be bothered with the latency stuff, it affects the feel.

High gain is fantastic on Gearbox! Actually this is really where Line6 does well, Amplitube has the edge with clean and slighty distorted sounds but Gearbox is no slouch either.

You might want to check out the metal add on pack if you dont have it, which device do you have?.

Gearbox and Toneport and you can get a hard and not synthetic sound out of your guitar. If you want to make a really "thick" record, record several layers (2-4) of the same riff and then, as a sweet touch, modify the tone in Gearbox ever so slightly and play the same riff again (or perhaps even a little modificated).
In my experience, giving the background riffs a lighter, brighter tone and adding the lead layer with a dark tone gives a very hard, honest metal feel. Don't know why, I would have expected it to be the other way round.

Anyway, I also use gearbox for rock bass. Regarding the bass I've never even dabbled with the presets in gb, but the results sound terrific in RW - and I got a $150 bass, not some over-the-top monster.

Thanks - this really helps.

I need to look on ebay for a bass actually...that was one comment on one of my compositions...the lack of a bass line.

I also only use gearbox with ux2 as I no longer have any amps , found gearbox great for most tones, but have just downloaded podfarm and it looks as though it maybe even better as you can use two amp sims at the same time, check it out.

I use both for heavy guitars (Gearbox with all addons, Amplitube all versions including Ampeg). Although more often than not, I find that I track with Studio Devil Virtual Guitar Amp. Then the usual situation is that I can't find anything else I like the sound of as much so Studio Devils stays put.

Metal Shop has quite awsome tones.
You might need to play with eq a lit bit to have the cabs shine through though.

also with podfarm you can really have very nice tight metal tones. (i.e not just panned left and right but both straight on too) one a bit bright and other hi gain gated for noise).

For more punch and harmonics if you need em, you can add a small (analog) booster or a tube pedal (analog) to your signal chain.

BTW for Folks those of you who like/know/can do a lil bit of electronics and soldering ,

The jack Orman Clean mosfet booster is a really a very nice almost transparent booster and really tightens the pod devices. if you do it on breadboard i think you can build it under $15 or so and with his pcb and proper casings etc perhaps $30. (btw use 2N7000 mosfets instead of BS170 which are very reliable and don't fry up) and it has a very very high input impedance so you will get about 99% of your guitar signal across with good SNR.

I Built Mine with TBP but havent felt the need to bypass it yet.
