Is there a way to trigger Riffworks to record at the same moment a sequencer begins playing back a synth part?

Can anyone recommend a free midi sequencer?

I'm trying to play a keyboard part that's in 7/4 and it's a little tough to play it right so I'd like the ability to record it with a sequencer and then edit the mistakes. But then I'd need to record it into Riffworks and have the sequncer and Riffworks start at the same time.

I believe you are referring to using rewire with a sequencer to import other instruments. I use RW with Reason for things like that. Are you running vista? If so there is an additional download required to get rewire working.

Sorry I do not have any clue on a good free sequencer.....

Thanks but I don't know about rewire. What I had in mind was playing the part I'm having trouble with into a seqencer. Then correcting the part. Then taking the synth output to the Pod X3 input (and using the console so as not to color the sound) and record the part into RW. But, I'd need to be able to trigger the sequence and RW at the same time. Hopefully that makes sense. Anybody know how to do that?

I guess once I have it recorded into a sequence, I can count in with RW's metronome and trigger the sequence to strt on time myself but I was looking for a better solution.
Thanks

I'd be interested too. Does anybody has experience with inserting midi tracks for keyboards, for example, into a RW file? I'm going to try that too, but some expertise would be quite helpful.

Concerning the Midi sequencer: I use Garageband. Isn't that free? (I honestly don't know, it came with my Mac).

To bring the Midi signal into the song, you could also work around the problem by finishing the song without it, finishing the Midi line and exporting it as a separate file and then join the two together in a tool like Audacity. With a midi sequencer you should be able to create a sound that fits into the song and doesn't need (much) work on it afterwards. Audacity offers some effects like reverb though.

You won't be able to directly get midi tracks in RW as RW is not a sequencer per se.

You will have to render your audio to a wave file and then either import them, rewire or record directly.

You can trigger RW via a midi event that your keyboard can fire as event etc however since there is no inbuilt midi clock /asio clock to sync to it will be hit and miss depending on latency and other things.

if You are a windows user you can try the RWKontrol program to trigger RW recording. The Link is in my signature.
