Hey guys, I was wondering if there was anyone here who was good at mixing/mastering (or generally making a song sound better). I am pretty new to the whole concept of mastering/mixing and I don't know much about all these terms such as compression, clipping, etc.

So I was wondering if anyone could take some of my MP3s and maybe mix them to sound better. For one, the songs I want to be mixed are metal songs so they are generally distorted and have some clipping & popping noises throughout. I downloaded Audacity and messed around in it, but had a hard timd figuring out how to make the songs sound better.

If this helps any, I want the songs to sound a bit clearer while retaining the lively sound they already had & staying somewhat loud (I know that sometimes you need to reduce volume or gain to get a better dynamic range, but I hate listening to quiet songs lol). Also, if anyone here decides to take a shot at this, I'd be glad to give you credit on my band's MySpace (which is where I upload my best songs)

Thanks in advance
-SchizoPhobic

PS: If you would rather give me some pointers on how to improve song quality than remix/remaster the songs yourself, I'd still be happy :)

Oh, almost forgot. If you are interested in doing this I'll email the MP3s to you

i may be able to help. I can mix a song with Pro-Tools. though, i need all instruments seperated into different files, and not riffs. full length all the way.

OK, thanks d3drocks

The song I wanted you to mix the most is the new song I am working on. I am 80% done, I just need to finish up the drums (which I can do over tonight/tomorrow morning). So I should have the seperate files to you by tomorrow.

Do you want rhythm & lead tracks on guitar seperate, or together?

As for mixing tips and tricks (especially when working with Riffworks) our fellow junkie "Gator" put together some very simple and easy to follow tutorials. They should help ya get started :) Check it out...

I agree check out Gator for the low down on mixing and mastering. If you want the songs mixed, and they were done with Riffworks, you would want to send the RWS files....an mp3 is an already compressed finished product. For mastering to really be effective you will need a good solid mix done before rendering to at least a 16 if not 32 bit wav file. Master as required, then compress and squish it down to mp3 format.

Anywho, check out the links to Gator's site, he has helped pretty much all of us at some point. Some more than others I am sure he will tell you.......lol

EVERYTHING seperate.
that includes each guitar.
it would also be nice (but not required) to have the cymbols seperate from the rest of the drumkit.

I cant guarentee a good mix, if the original mix was bad while recording, though

Each guitar track seperate? Okay :)

I have some riffs where there are 2 seperate lead parts panned left and right, can I just keep those together as one guitar track (along with all the single lead tracks in other riffs?)

Also, I think I'll send you the guitar and bass tracks because I was mainly concerned about the popping noises (mostly in bass tracks) & excessive fuzz (in guitar tracks)

As for the drums, I think I could work those out myself. That just makes less work for you :)

PS: I don't want to rush you, but do you think you could get this done within the next 2 days? I have a goal to have 12 songs finished and in MP3 form before 2009, so I sorta wanted this to be finished by the 31st. If you can't do that, that's OK, I'll just upload the rough version to MySpace until you are done with the remix :)

BTW, thanks for offering to do this for me. I love this forum because there are so many nice people willing to help you out in one way or another, and it's great to have that as a musician :)

As a satisfied customer and as others have stated above…gator is the man (yes, I know it's an oxymoron lol). I highly recommend him.

Gator sounds like he's really good at what he does, I've had other people tell me to go to him before. I would be glad to, but I am sorta short on cash at the moment

It’s best to start by gaining a basic understanding of how to improve your recordings with RiffWorks. This old thread might be helpful.

Here the link:
http://www.sonomawireworks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=3027

Granted, it’s a long thread but one of the most informative and should help you put together a satisfying recording.

Well if your sounds have pops and clips from clipping at the input, then you are pretty much stuck with that. If you are clipping at the output and causing pops then no problem.

Why don't you create a private colab and then open it and import your song, add me to the invite list and I'll give it a whirl and you'll be able to log in and see whats going on. I really enjoy this. We'll get a good solid mix going and then master it after. Don't make it public or people will probably want to add stuff.
