I have the free edition, so maybe this is my problem. I like the software, but if I don't want to layer, and just want to pound out a whole song, what do i need to do.

I tried clicking the button, can't remember whats its called, but i still only got like 8 seconds

Do you intend on using a single drummer session for the entire song?
You could make a bunch of drummer session segments and drag them to the song line and then hit the "song layer" button and then the red record button.
At that point play away over the entire song

thx for the feedback...

I dont even really care about the drums at this point. Basically i just want to hear what i sound like, guitar only, when playing a whole song i know.

When i hit record it break down everything into 8 measures, and then auto adds a new track. I just want to hit record and let it go for like 3 minutes and then play that whole thing back.

If you have access to the song layer click on the hit record and play away. No "riffs" are required.

Did you try increasing length before your hit record for the first time.
Once you hit record, that legth will be set forever.
You can tell if the trial version can be edited by the little lock next to the length button.
hit create and see if you can change the 8

Where do you see song layer?

Top left by the song bar...that takes you to the song layer which "normally" is a layer that records across the entire length of your song.

Funny thing, I tried what you are doing about a week ago and found that it is possible.

I had a hard time finding it at first also. Just click where it says "song layer" [Ithink thta is what it says], then hit record and play as long as you like...

Being new to Riffworks I have to admit it would be nice to have the option just to hit record and be able to record endlessly until hitting stop. Which would also lead to the need for a function to splice off bars if needed without having to use other software.. Both would be nice options.

I find myself having to choose a high number of bars then hitting play. I then play what I intend to play on my guitar. When I finish I look at the timeline to get a approx number of bars I need to record. Needless to say if I'm off a bar I can end up being cut short or finishing too soon.

Gmaj7,

You can just record yourself on the song layers, and then count the bars. But you'll still have to put enough riffs in the song timeline so you don't run out of drums while you're playing. If are playing with real people you have to learn to count how many bars you're playing for a part so you can tell the drummer. We tried to stay away from the trimming and cutting and pasting in the software. RiffWorks is about playing your guitar, not about editing. If you have to play the part twice to figure out how long it is, then you just practiced more. That's never a bad thing:)

cheers,
dug
