Hello,

The new free Riffworks T4 Version 2.5.0.3009 crashes during recording.

(Before that, Version 2.2.1.2930 crashed also after i tried to open another RW File.
RW crashed after i made a recording, saved the files and after i tried to open another File.)

2) Before that i had serious WinXP Problems
see:
http://line6.com/support/message.jspa?messageID=333070#333070

3) The Question is now:
Are there still some USB Driver/ASIO Driver/ PODxt Problems?
(still.., because i think my Laptop had some USB1.0 Problems with the first specs..)

Or are there Memory Leaks(dirty Pointer Programming, etc... ) in Riffworks itself? In that case we only could wait for the next Release Version..??

I can upload some dump files which were generated by Riffworks at the time of the crash?
(How can i do this on this forum, or do i have to email the dump files to the support?)

4) Detailed HW Settings:
PODxt: USB Firmware: 1.12 , Flash Memory: 3.01 Connection USB: ESN 01527815
I use a Ubuntu 8.04 Linux / WinXP-Home Edition dual boot system
Notebook Specs: 256 MB RAm, 1,2 Ghz, 20 GB Harddrive, USB 1.x

http://www.sonomawireworks.com/pr-riffworks-2.5.php

The new Version Riffwork T4build 2.5.0.3009 crashes with an unhandled exception anyway.. )-:

Now, it occures at some point during recording...
sometimes RW looses the PODxt Asio USB Driver connection, and sometimes not..??
And after one crash, it is not possible to re- open the file without an unhandeled exception. I have to restart WinXP.

any suggestions?
thanx MetalMusic

Hi,

RiffWorks really requires 512 MB RAM at the very least for smooth functioning; we recommend 1 GB. A 1.8 GHz processor is also recommended. So I suspect that your issues stem from RiffWorks being a bit too much for your system to process, but if you would like I can take a closer look. Next time that you experience the crash, and before you relaunch RiffWorks, send a log file to us at support using the link in my signature. You can find the log here: C:...My DocumentsSonoma Wire WorksRiffWorksriffworks.log.

After a crash, the Line 6 drivers will shut down. If you just unplug the device for at least 15 seconds, then plug it back, you can reset the drivers.

Best,
Garrett

Hi Garrret,

thanks for the quick response.
Well, i was afraid you or somebody else would say that i have a too old PC (-;
But i think i have to upgrade the RAM memory for other SW anyway.

If you can spare a bit of your time i would be very thankfully.
I have some old exception Files from Version 2.2 and the last are from RW T4 2.5.

The Rw T4 v2.5 exc1 occurred when i was recoding a Filewith totally: 13 riffs and 2,50 minutes, 33 MB from the *.rws File only one guitar.
Suddenly it crashed. (after 3 hours...maybe..) Than i tried to re-open the *.rws file and a immediate crash occurred. (I guess the WinXP Operating System or the drivers were in an indeterministic condition) So exceptions 2+3 maybe must have occured..?
So i rebooted the system , and it was ok.

I knew that RW requires a stronger PC at least 512 MB Ram, 1,8 GHz, and so on..
But in my experience i got a lot of other SW work at older machines (-:
It is clear that companies must draw a line for which equipment their SW will not work adequate. (And that their support will not have to solve all problems (-;)
But in most cases, the SW is working anyway, just a bit slower..
I think the question for Riffwork is, how the real time-behaviour from the ASIO driver will react with a less strong PC.

So i was hoping that the problems of my older but good PC would be limited to:

1)
That i cannot make very long recordings. (10-20 minutes), because of the outrunning memory, so the swap file is getting bigger and there is more bus traffic from RAM to diskspace..

2)
I may have terrible latency and less sound quality (I only use 16 Bit depth/ audio files and from medium to extra large Buffer size at the driver settings from the ASIO Control Panel

3)
That the System and RW is not responding very fast. (i threw out all unnecessary drivers, Firewalls, Virusscanners, from the main memory..[the PC will not be coneccted with the internet *gg*] )

4)
In my assumption the worst case that could occur is that the ASIO-USB device itself needs a lot of resources and if the CPU is to slow, the tasks for the buffer?/frames? from the FIFO or STACK for Riffworks would not be delivered in time. So a SW-process in RW is gonna waiting for them, but the next thread from the multitasking?? programmed SW needs it already, but did not get it and it crashes with an unhandeled exception.
Hmmm... Maybe there could possibly be a bit dirty programming, that better should try(){...}catch() this manner. Or RW is running fine anyway and my old PC is the problem.

The older, more serious problem with the blue screens i had before, did not occur anymore.

Well i can say, RW is working quite fine anyway. I can do recordings with an acceptable performance. But Sometimes it crashes at a 15 - 30 % rate (in 3 from 10 times..??) and than the best is to reboot the system.

I have a little experience at compiling some Linux drivers for my ubuntu operating system, and see how it works or not *gg*

But i must admit that i'm no Audio- ASIO-USB SW-expert. I only knew some basics. So maybe your only task is to remind me that i need i new PC. (-;

Thank you very much,
regards & greetings from Vienna

MetalMusic

PS: RW in combination with Line6 PODxt is a very cool Recording Tool !!!

PPS: Sorry for the terrible English grammar *gg*

Garret has checked the files, but did not find anything that indicates that RW is'nt working fine. So first, i'm gonna upgrade the memory or i try another Driver
http://www.sonomawireworks.com/guide/index.php/Recommended_Hardware
or , i have to live with it (-;

thanks for your help anyway
