Use of drums programs with Rifftracker?

Hey all.

Just wondering what the best way would be for me to use pre-programmed drums while composing songs in Riff Tracker. The Instant Drummer is great but seems limited. Some of my music is a little odd so I'd want to put in some odd time sig stuff which doesn't seem to be catered for all that well, and sometimes I just like to program the drums exactly the way I want em! The program doesnt really seem to be able to import any file that isn't a Riffworks file - or am I missing something?

I used to have a Roland drum machine to program drum loops but thats practically prehistoric now - and recently went kaput so couldn't use it even if I wanted to. I'm pretty new to recording on a PC - previously used digital 8 tracks as never could afford a PC powerful enough to record music. Just wondering if someone might be able to recommend me a program with realistic and natural sounding drums. I've heard great things about EZ Drummer and Drumkitfromhell

Thanks guys,
Cúán

I'm still learning EZDrummer but it is very nice. I don't use it with Riffworks though.

VSTi support, as far as I know, isn't something that RiffTracker is able to offer. There are a few people using RiffWorks who are messing around with Rewire but the whole 'external drummer' thing seems to be a bit unexplored so far.

As regards being 'stuck' with the InstantDrummer, you can switch it off totally if you find something to take its place but, in the meantime, have you explored the Sonoma Store and listened to all of the ID sessions available? You might find something in there that fits your need.
The other option is REX2 files which are available (many of them are free) if you search the 'Net.
Cheers!
Scott

You can also use ReWire to link RiffWorks to third party applications that have drum sequencers. I use Reason frequently for drums.

I also use reason, and I know some users are using REAPER with success (I have not tried it myself). REAPER is a low cost option if you are a limited budget and you can use it to host VSTi's and dxi's(in windows) etc.

If you have Reason, you can use the Redrum computer to program your own beats and bring them into RWS very easily via rewire.

Will Reason run EZ Drummer? Is there any hope for VSTi support in the future (near or distant)?

I am not sure about that, but if you have Reason try the Redrum computer, you will be amazed with what is possible. Not to mention you get all of the other instruments to insert in the recordings as well. Reason and a midi controller in combination with Riffworks is pretty much all you would need.

personally, i would NEVER reccomend reason, as its fairly difficult, and has no vst support, or soundfont support.

also the fact that they stated they will never let any free DAWs use Rewire, nor will they support the educational use of it.

FL-Studio will do this and all you need is the fruity edition assuming your not going to record in FL.

I don't think Reason is that bad, the Combinator feature makes it pretty easy to pull up sounds/instruments, and the sequencing side of things is no worse than any other proggy.

For the money it is the complete package, and packed full of goodies. Depends on what you are looking for I guess. But as a companion to RWS to add other instruments and beats, it is a great tool.

The fact that is does not support VST or soundfont was never an issue for me.....again all a matter of preference. Rewire could be any easier to implement.....heck if I can figure it out anyone can......lol

While reason does not support vst it DOES support soundfonts(at least the sf2 soundfonts) within the NN-XT sampler.

Bottom line, all you need is any program that will be a rewire slave AND host vsti's. REAPER, Acid Pro, Ableton live all qualify. Reason will be a rewire slave, but will not host vsti's, but does give you multiple options for drums.

Ableton Live will act as a rewire slave when used with RWS?

But it will not load any external vst/vsti when slave.Only its internal modules.
