Staiway to heaven #1, am I suprised? Actually, the list is booring. Nothing stands out, just the same old fart classics.

I made a spotify playlist for anyone interested of it:

It's a list of common places, I think. It would be more interesting to go by music moods or styles. For example, if you're into Jazz guitar playing - there's not a single Jazz solo in those Top 50. If you're into progressive Rock music - there's no Allan Holdsworth, no Petrucci, no Lifeson in there, not even an Al Di Meola or John McLaughlin. Instead, it's the classic pieces by Gilmour, Hendrix, and inexplicably Kirk Hammett.

For me personally, I'd say that not a single one of those Top 50 made me want to play guitar. As much as I love Gilmour, as much as I acknowledge the power of songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, Hotel California and Stairway to Heaven - they're a bit of an "Old Fart's List".

I kinda picture the author of that list as a man in his late 40s still adoring The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Dunno. That's not for me.

NO! Jeff Beck??? No Alex Lifeson ??

surely they (guitar world) didn't got their act together or are using a very limited
palette. These do contain some of the best specific solos for a genre, but classifying these as top 50 solos on a particular instrument (guitar in this case) is somewhat deceptive statement.

Many new youngsters are going to read and break each others balls and heads (inevitable) over their favorite amongst these. Realizing later in life there's a plethora of other artists on the instrument out there, they never really listened to due to some immature rating/classification act of certain individuals.

I hope this not just one of those record promo gimmicks where a cd set is released for all these tracks.

yeah not my top 50 either. Nice to see that Gilmour uses a composite technique for constructing solos. I do that as well in riffworks....always thought I needed to due to my sloppy playing (rationalized under the argument that I was preserving feel). Now I've had it validated....:)

Edit: damn Bill Gates I did not use a 'z' in rationalised....

Well, those are his top fifty, but I agree that there are some serious omissions. It's subjective.
The comments were interesting, however.

So that explains why when I play stuff on your collabs I can never remember what I've done. And I thought it was old age. Thanks Jouni, you can be the Roger to my David...:)

thats rigged. Neil young isnt much of a guitar player (and i have no respect for him as a person. going on stage so high that you can barely stand up is not something thats cool. its just plain stupid) he shouldnt have even made the list.
Slash is way to low on on there. sholuda been up higher. satriani and vai should have also been higher up.
how the hell nervana made that list, i have no clue. they just plain suck.
I agree with dire straits. sultans was a great song.
I cant even believe they didnt put john petrucci on the list, or Michael angelo.
those two deserved to be like #1 and 2.
i dont know if any of you have heard this Michael angelo song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkDE-1l2iYo
but its awesome, and blows alot of guys out of the water.
same with these 2 petrucci songs:

More Hendrix (I can't help it I just love his playing - even his simplest solo's like on the Wind Cries Mary, brilliant ).

Robben Ford's "North Carolina" from "The Inside Story" has a brilliant blues solo, check it out if you get a chance.
