I'm sure there's lots of songs and players we'd like to see included in that list, but come on - Neil Young and Kurt Cobain?? Hell, Cobain was quoted on several occasions as saying he didn't even consider himself a guitar player. He was a cultural phenomenon, not a musician. And Neil Young, well I'd rather listen to cats copulating on a chalkboard than listen to him sing or play. My apologies to the 3 people out there who still remember who Neil Young is. ;)

Kurt wasn't a musician? Maybe not a technician but a musician definitely. He did punk and did it well.

I'd be happy to have a hundredth of the talent that guy had for cranking out melodies and songs. RAW elegance.

I'm not defending Kurt's place on that list as maybe it's not justified but to say the guy wasn't a musician is crazy.

If he was a member on this forum or a buddy down the road cranking out songs people would be going `Great Song Dude!` It's just because he IS a cultural phenomenon there's a different set of standards.

He wasn't a sophisticated musician I'll give you that but there is a lot to be said for simplicity.

Who is quoted as saying this about Kurt "He had a touch most guitarists would kill for"

We'll have to agree to disagree on Kurt lostylost. To me, the over-use of effects and mindless repetition found in most Nirvana songs smack of a player who isn't that confident in his songwriting abilities. The drummer from Nirvana, don't remember his name, but I actually like him. He went on to form Foo Fighters and I really dig a lot of their tunes. I think he has more songwriting ability in his little finger than Cobain had in his entire body.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to be a technician to be considered a good musician. Some of the best guitarists were also some of the sloppiest (think Hendrix, Page, etc). And I mean that in a good christian way, I love both Hendrix and Zeppelin.

Kurt Cobain certainly was a gifted song writer, singer and rocker! Every song he wrote stuck to my mind. His guitar work was naive and simple but yet powerful. Does he qualify for the 50 best guitar solos, nah ... and I don't think he would care a goddamn bleeping bleep about that.

Kurt was a phenomenon and rocked the world till it lasted. His songwriting skills debate will always be there, however, the question :is he worthy of rock 'n' roll fame : YES (he did had a noticeable presence and contribution)

is he worthy of a top 50 spot in 50 greatest "SOLOS" in the R'n'R history (they used the superlative there) ? unfortunately no , at least not at the expense of some other talented musicians (i hope we can agree that there have been some serious omissions from the list, in contrast to some of what's currently on there).

A better debate could be on -> who made this selection for the top 50 list ?? ;)

They seemed to have listed all popular songs to please everyone, but ended up pissing off every other.

All these listed are surely great - no doubt about that, but not the greatest.

Actually I think he *may* have been worthy as a representative of minimal melodic anti guitar hero style IF AND ONLY IF they had more styles represented. It was a 50 greatest `classic rock` solos essentially.

50 best guitar solos ever? `guitar` They should have broken that down into genres and picked the `definitive` examples and proponents.

Jazz, Blues ... Hell, even with those two you can subcategorise like crazy.

Classical? Flamenco? Fusion? Acoustic ?

Drifting by Hendrix is my favorite `solo`, though it's more just a piece of music with guitar as the centerpiece. So dreamlike, actually sounds at parts like someone getting lost in thought and then snapping out of their reverie at points. Drifting indeed.

Maybe we could set up a list? First vote for categories? Then nominations ? Then winners?

Oh and speaking of little fingers and not sure that we understand how this relates but Hendrix's greatest solo (see other thread) was on a rip off song written by Bob Dylan. Now theres some talent. But Dylan was listed as one of the best vocalists? Debate that one. Oh and just for the record Neil Young sucks, he totally f'd a good CSN gig.
Now that's com'n from a southern man. :)

Yeah Cobain was definitely loved by millions, so there's gotta be something to it. But I think we can all agree he didn't deserve to be on that list. Plus you have to question the integrity of anyone who would willingly bang Courtney Love. I guess heroin is a hell of a drug. ;)
