My fellow guitarists,

I have a problem and I know many of you do as well so, let's hear your feedback on this most important subject...

There are just too many guitars in the world today and they're getting more and more affordable! :D So far, I have: 1 bass, 3 acoustics, and 4 electrics. So, how many is TOO many? I can barely play them all and I still want more!!!

Here's how I've broken it down (for now) to the maximum justifiable instruments one could/should own as a guitarist:

Acoustics: 3 total. A classical and 2 steel strings: one with a bright tone (ex. Taylor) and another with a dark tone (ex. Gibson). I don't have a classical at the moment :(

Bass: Just 1 to cover all yer basses, pun intended ;) Hey, c'mon...you're a guitarist after all!

Electrics: Ahhhh, this is where it can get interesting....

Vintage-style: 2 (a Fender-type and a Gibson-type or, maybe 2 of the same)

Shredder-style: 1 (unless this is the only style you play and need more diversity)

Utility (all-purpose guitar): 2-4 (1-2 for backup and 1-2 if you want a slight variation such as all single coil vs. all humbucker.)

Specialty (Variax, Parker, Gretch, etc.): Well, the sky is the limit here but I would guess no more than 3 'cos we gotta put a cap on it somewhere.

That's potentially 14 guitars :O  Hey, G.A.S. is a serious condition!! One has to justify all of this expensive lumber somehow

Your thoughts please...

There is no such thing as too many guitars... there is, however, such thing as not enough... 14 isn't enough :P

You don't have to justify anything. If you have the money and you want the guitar, buy it. So often it's the women in our lives that makes us feel like we have to justify a guitar purchase. "You're buying ANOTHER guitar?? What do you need another one for??"

Meanwhile one check of her closet will reveal 20 pairs of black heels.

Mrs Highlander often passes the remark, "But you can only play one guitar at a time, why do you need another one?"

My usual response is, "You can only wear one pair of shoes at a time, why do you need another pair?" and then I duck out of the line of fire of a pair of flying, strapless sandals.

Personally, I go with the Rick Nielsen guitar theory. He's owned over 2,000 in his career but says his current collection of 250 is too many. I'd be happy to take one or two off his hands and bring it down to a more manageable number.
Cheers!
Scott

The Number of fingers X Number of hours you have for them X GAS Factor

I would add you need a campfire guitar too. I have an old beater that plays nice so I use it when camping. Once you get that campfire and beer smell impregnated in your git - you can't get it out. Also, good for protection against the occassional cougar or bear if needed (el kabong).

I've adopted the policy that if it doesnt get played its out the door. One bass is fine if your a guitar player, but those heavy stringers have and need as much variety as we do. Hey a friend on another forum has 62 JP guitars why anyone would need 62 of the same guitar I dunno. I guess its better than the stock market.

The answer to your questions is 3.............3 is too many.

More guitars means more maintenance too, I keep one, sometimes 2 main guitars kicking around that is it. But I am not normal so don't take my opinion too seriously.
