I have been beating my poor little red Variax 300 all to hell the past 4 years with countless gigs and riffcasts. I think I am about due for a new workhorse to take over some of the workload. For the longest time I have wanted a Paul Reed Smith masterpeice but they were always way overpriced for mere mortals. Ever since they released the more reasonablyl priced guitars I have been toying with the idea of picking one up. I have about $600-$750 put aside for a new axe and was wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on what to get.

Here is what I am looking for:

Solidbody with a rosewood fingerboard, 24 jumbo frets,
Locking trem and tuners, binding.

I was thinking about one of these maybe:

Any thoughts or alternatives?

Do not take a PRS with a trem. They just don't stay in tune - trust me, I've got two.

From what you're saying about locking trem and 24 jumbo frets, that PRS SE seems an unlikely choice anyway - sounds more like you're looking for a very modern guitar... A couple of years ago, I wouldn't have thought I'd ever say that, but I'm very happy with my Yamaha RGX 620. The RGX seem to be amazing value, incredibly easy and fast to play, have a nice trem that WORKS...

Checkout a Maton Mastersound, an Aussie electric made by the company that Tommy Emmanuel endorses.

They are great value for money to start with and our dollar is faring poorly in its endless struggle against the greenback at the moment.

1100 AUD = 715 USD Shop around.

Bobbo since you already love the Vax 300....why don't you upgrade to the 600 or 700? The 600 plays real sweet has a neck like a classic Tele and plays real fast.

I haven't got my hands on a 700 yet but I'd love to try one out myself. I know it's a little above your price range but hey....at least your "Junkie" brethren can check it out when we come out to the whales vag. :D muahahahhahahaaaaaaa

P.S. that PRS looks real sweet too. I wouldn't worry too much about the trem staying in tune as I don't think you go too whammy crazy, at least I've never heard ya! :)

Bob good luck in your quest. I have too ask, what were your favorite sounds on the variax? Might be an indication of the type of guitar you should be looking at.

You can always look into a Carvin. You can get their PRS copy made the way you want it. And yes, they look great, sound great and stay in tune.

hmmm...Carvin. I might have to look into that. I designed the air conditioning for the factory here in San Diego (Poway). Maybe the will give me a bro-deal. Building a custom guitar sounds fun.

I love my Carvin's! I have a 2000 DC400A, anniversary model, a 1980 DC400 and a 5 string fretless bass. They are all works of art!

Bobbo, you and me need to go out to the Carvin factory here in Poway. You can check all the custom options. They's pretty snappy from what I gather.

Yeah. I would love to have that guitar. I really enjoyed playing yours when we jammed! It is a piece of art for sure and the neck through the body is very cool.

I always thought Ibanez puts out a lot of bang for the buck... I have an old Roadstar II that plays real nice. Gigged for years with that puppy.

Agreed, Ibanez is really good. I have a s520ex http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM05/Content/Ibanez/PR/S520EXBK-lg.jpg

It sounds good on so many genres
