I used TuxGuitar back in the days it could only view guitar pro files.
currently it looks really good, ill try it. Guarenteed its going to work better in linux then windows though (seeing as the tux penguin is the linux logo, and the app is essentially designed to run on unix systems).
EDIT: just noticed the java versions. maybe i was wrong :p I remember it in the past not needing any dependancies.

those guys are making tab software that opens guitar pro files, and can sync to an mp3. it then shows the tabs in the style of guitar hero!
