The "from the editor" section from the March 09 issue of Mix Magazine is about using the internet to make music. At the end, they say "How has internet technology changed the way you make music? Let us know by dropping a line at mixeditorial@mixonline.com

I'm often blown away, not just by the music you guys are creating, but by the comments you make about the technology. Feel free to send Mix your thoughts as well and don't forget to point them to your music. :)

Cheers,
Michelle

Here's what I wrote...

Hi, my name is Rich and I am an avid user of RiffWorks and Riffworld.com. I use this software and internet service to write and release music online with people from all over the world! It's hard to find the words to describe the difference it has made in my life. I can tell you that it's HUGE!

It's quite an intimate thing to write a song with another person. It takes the right chemistry and setting. So, when I first saw RiffLink (the tool we use to collaborate) come online I was very excited but skeptical. Imagine writing songs with people from other parts of the world when you barely speak each others language and have never met! Now, imagine writing a song that is good enough to be "radio ready" with your new found virtual band. Exciting right!? It's happening every day now. RiffWorks and the Riffworld.com web site have made it completely doable. All of us continue to be amazed that it's even possible. We are writing REAL music here and much of it is professional quality. It's amazing that it can work as well as it does. Even some of the early adopters, who've used the software since it was released (6 years ago), are STILL impressed!

Another thing has occured. We've all become better musicians. You can really hear the difference from when we first started. There is a musical maturity that has taken place. Our timing and composition skills keep improving. The natural thing that happens when you have to make compromises and leave room for everyone's parts to get heard is that you become a better songwriter and RiffLink is a big part of that.

Inspiring! If I had to break it down to a single word, that would be it. This software and online community of musicians and songwriters keeps me inspired to make music. And the RiffRumble contests keep raising the bar so that we all push to do better. This whole musical trip has opened so many doors for me. It has accelerated my musical growth in a way that is hard to measure. It's not just a "tool" or a technological means to an end. It's a complete paradigm shift in how we make and present our music!

Here's a link to my profile where you can hear what I and other musicians I've collaborated with have created: http://www.riffworld.com/Members/blue4u

Thanks,
Rich
