I've realized recently, that I'm no guitarist. I havnt been able to improve for over a year, yet my musical skill, sound design, and mastering techneques have gotten me contracts with companies doing sound design, and demo mp3s (all without my guitar).
in 2 months, I've learned to play the keyboard/piano at a stable level (using 2 hands).
I have 1 deep/progesssive house album out...no guitar in it.
I play guitar for a MINIMUM of 2 hours a day, most days its more like 4, but I cant improve on it. Something's really messed up with me I guess.

Ive been told by a few people, that somehow, I've past them in sound knowledge. these are people who have been in audio for 25-30 years.

meh, I'm thinking of slowly phasing out of guitar now, after realizing this.

Well you don't have to be a pro to enjoy it. If you like playing then keep at it. If not, stick with what makes you happy. My $.02.

If you're trying to improve your guitar playing for a purpose and feel it's getting you nowhere then yeh, give up if you feel it's time wasted.
If you're playing guitar because you like it, hang in there. Playing for pleasure has far more benefits to it than pressuring yourself to the point of frustration.
Cheers!

d3drocks,
sometimes all it takes is a bit of time and patience and if you have been playing over a year, you have already crossed the biggest hurdle, and every individual's mileage varies in instruments. just enjoy what you do.

Perhaps even give it a break for a week or so.
Sometimes the brain just needs to relax and act as a compressor to even out the things you have learned so far and bring them up.

The best advice I can give you is to walk away and take a breather. I play like crap when I try to play....play my best when I just wing it and am doing it to just have fun.

You get into ruts, and I have stopped playing for months on end, in fact I went a whole year without even owning a guitar! Keep it fun, keep it light and it will come around again and you will be back on a positive learning curve again.

Then again maybe it is just not your instrument. No shame in admitting that.......do what you enjoy.

What area do you want to improve on? Just the technical aspects?

Maybe some lessons would help?

thanks for all the input guys. I appreciate it. I guess I will take a break for a while, then take lessons for finger picking, sweeping, and other issues (like using all 4 fingers on the fretboard. I currently use 3)
I guess im getting annoyed, cause I was offored a release deal on my latest trance song "left behind" (which can be heard here: http://www.myspace.com/bulmanchris ). if you compare it to all of my stuff on riffworld, its CENTURIES ahead. (even tho the mix isnt to great).
maybe its just my age (18), that causes me to go through crap like this and question what I am doing.

It's all about personal enjoyment right? I've been playing for 30 years (damn has it been that long?) and even though sometimes I hit a plateau, I still look forward to playing every chance I have. Everyone has to have a creative outlet and right or wrong, music is ours.

Cheers and good luck!

Hey man, don't be so down on yourself, I haven't improved in over 30 years.. :) If you enjoy it, then thats all that matters.

Or 4 fingers. Listen to what matchy can do without using his pinky....

Whatever flex.....just about everyone here would love to achieve your level of suckiness :D

To d3d, if picking makes you happy, stick with it and screw the progress barometer. If picking always seems like a chore and is never fun, it might be time to give it up. My 2 cents. :)
