The worst thing to realize is that dream you're having where you are walking around at work with no pants on... isn't a dream.

I could never imagine myself Phasing out of guitar just because I was better at another aspect of music....why would you phase out of anything that rounded out your ability in any direction...its just a weapon in your arsenal...contract or no contract. Go with your gut man...It just sounds alien to me.

Remember the great words of ole Bill Shakespeare : To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.

It all comes down to process over product. Patience and most anything good comes from being relaxed and in the moment. Relaxed comes from not caring about the outcome.

When there is only the timelessness of absorption into the music and no concept of future how could you be impatient?

Treat whatever drills you have like a meditation. I find playing a long with a loop very helpful for that. When your mind wanders take it back to the loop.

Learn some breathing exercises, deep breaths into your diaphragm help with concentration and relaxation.

You're just in a rutt. To get out of it - do like some others suggested. Take a break. Also, I bet you have been making progress over the last year but cannot notice it yourself. Try using your practice time for something that is less learning intensive and try to have more fun (and maybe only like 1 hour instead of a set 2 hours or whatever). Maybe do a cover song or 2. Pick songs where you have the MP3 for reference. Maybe do a song on the keys and then put some guitar on it. Get on craigs list and find a new random jam partner. I think you can see what I'm saying. Mix it up.. Playing music is like being married.. You got to put a little life into it or it will wither away and die and might even turn you bitter. ;)

Just .02 - Good-Luck!

Heres one thing I do, goolge "free backing tracks". There's bunches of sites with great backing tracks of different songs minus the lead guitar. A great practice tool for me. And if your into learning the blues, my favorite site is bluesblast.com.

When I get sick of my guitar, I try to play my mandolin, then I realize how much I like my guitar... Get a mandolin... ;)

Well a mandolin is certainly cheaper than a wife, but if you really want something to drive you towards your guitar get a wife. The effect only works after you've had one for a year or two though...:)

But she probably has a keylogger set and pores over the days output at night. Sitting in bed with a laptop while Colin peacefully snores unaware of his impending `Bobbit` doom
