Treat whatever drills you have like a meditation. I find playing a long with a loop very helpful for that. When your mind wanders take it back to the loop.
Learn some breathing exercises, deep breaths into your diaphragm help with concentration and relaxation.

I remember reading an interview with Vai from back in the day where he said he gets ideas for melodies from human speech. He'll record someone speaking a sentence, then turn their inflection into notes on a guitar. So you could speak the words, "pooter is a righteous dude" then turn that into a short melody on guitar. Try it out!

Well a mandolin is certainly cheaper than a wife, but if you really want something to drive you towards your guitar get a wife. The effect only works after you've had one for a year or two though...
