mhm.
I do.
Ive got my system duel booted with the Ubuntu 9.04 beta right now (www.ubuntu.com) and oooh man, its slick!
srsly, I know alot of people think its a hard system to use, and it can be, I'll admit it.
but then I have to ask, can your PC/Mac do this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR8JoHxgf7M
I had a quick search in youtube and found that. its VERY out of date, but it still looks awesome.
what you are seeing is not faked. thats actually how the desktop interface can be set up. Ive done it myself.
heh,
I find it weird that a free OS runs so well compared to such expensive ones.
(well, not really, its community developed, meaning ALOT more hours of development go in)

Yep. I use Ubuntu and it's a great Free OS. It's easy to install (easier than XP or Vista) and works wonderfully. I put OpenOffice, Firefox, & Thunderbird w/Lightning on it and bamm.. Does most everything my XP systems will do. I'm just installing the Ubuntu Server (stable) and will see how it works. SUSE is nice too if interested in user friendly Linux Disti's.

Cheers

my current favorite thing about linux is its ability to run windows programs via WINE, and PlayOnLinux.
http://www.winehq.org/
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/

I've managed to get it to run FL-Studio perfictly.
its a great system.

I wont doubt it will work after compiling WineASIO. its a bit of work, but it should run riffworks just fine.

Like I said, let me know?

The thing is, you have to use some other module to get things to work. I can run any OS within windows, I can just use a VM to do that.

And I don't want to sit around playing with my desktop all day either. The eye candy is cool, but after awhile you start to say to yourself, what positive outcome have I done with what ever machine/OS your using.

Bring that to my world and try to run the apps at my company, which really isn't a lot, and I bet we run into problems. We run Mozilla FF, Thunderbird, Office, Call record management software, VoIP software, PAVO, Norton AV, Putty, Gradience HR, Pipkins WFM, ICQ, GAIM, and Pideon. I think it's safe to say we would be spending more time in getting all this to work than actaully getting work done, then it would be thrown in the trash.

It's a good OS to "play" around with, but to get actaul work down I don't think so. It's unregulated, non-stadarized, and its not organized at all. You have every joe blow trying to create different packages to get this or that to work.

Let me know guys, just let me know that's all I am saying. I would love to be able to get away from the claws of MS or MAC, but I need an OS that can do more ON IT'S OWN than just bend and snap windows.

u kidding? this OS is GEARED towards businesses!
the website you are viewing at this moment is most likely running a debian server. debian happens to be linux.

Redhat Specializes in linux for corporations: http://www.redhat.com/

Its definetly a business OS, because of its massive security and stabability.
aupon installing Linux, you get everything you need to run the system and do daily things built in.
Just because it's different, doesnt mean its hard or not as good.
the american military uses Unix/Linux Systems, (I believe my canadian government does as well), and many other countries use them.
its also incredibly hard to crash. I managed to crash my ubuntu once, but I had to forkbomb it to do it (fork bombing is basically the process of telling your PC to add numbers as fast as it can).

I am a true-blue Microsoft evangelist and still like Linux (some distro's). And yes, it is very capable of doing business class and enterprise level computing. Just for instance.. Florida State switched from MS to Linux. NATO, Belgium, and many other countries use this daily in intensive business environments. Running down Linux is like saying recycling is a bad idea. It works - and a lot of the arguments these days are just leftovers from IT guys trying to justify their job back in the 90's (IMHO). Did I mention it a has tighter security model, or how easy it is to setup wolf-packs and clusters? Some Linux basher's need to do the homework.. Did I mention it's totally free? Compare the cost of licenses and cals for windows XXXX server or building out an Exchange server and then review the cost if doing via linux. You might be shocked (based on your writings) how this all works very well and super-affordable. And yes, support is available for many distros that are stable and solid (SUSE, Red Hat, and more).

lol guys,
This is a never ending debate until one of em runs outta life.

imho, at business/server end linux is much more apt and suitable, as solone1 mentioned (but us techies should also understand that all business decisions are not just based on what's better tech but rather cost effectiveness,ROI and implementation costs to be entire business process) etc.

Linux still got a lotta ground to cover to become or get accepted as a mainstream desktop OS, where windows and mac currently shine.

In the hand of techies either of them can run as stable as you want (and poor policing/setup can cripple and crash either as badly), but then the techies are usually also the business end and not really the avg client/consumer which any OS needs to become mainstream. (arguable point though).

When more and more companies start developing Dedicated desktop stuff for linux users (where they can just install and run the damn thing and not have to figure out a way with emulators and stuff) and the more so avg people start using that in both home as business end, only then we will see a major paradigm shift, till then debate goes on and on.....

Btw, i can't help but mention that linux has saved my a$$ on countless occasions. and am a huge fan of the smaller pendrive/cd desktop distros like knoppix, slax kill bill.... etc. But still am a windows user on a daily basis.

thats the thing though.
On my Ubuntu boot (duel booted with vista here), I can double click any .exe file as I would in Windows, and expect it to run.
I Made screenshots of ubuntu running a graphics heavy game called Prey for the 3DRealms forums last year:

all I did was double click the exe on a windows partition.
this works for installers also.
double click a .exe install file, or a .msi file and expect it to work jsut fine.

We've had our Linux accounting server crash for basically no reason. Other times power got cut off of this server and the file directories got all shuffled for no reason. I've never heard of a MS OS doing this, either it wouldn't boot up at all or it will, but never seen folders and files move to other locations on the HD. WEIRD! The thing is that this OS has never really been put to the test yet so until that does I wouldn't open my mouth just yet.

On the server level yes, on the client level no way. You can't tell me that the applications I have will just run fine and there not be any problems there is no way that'll ever happen. I know, we have linux servers all over the place here, but on a server level only, thats where Linux OS's shine. We are a web hosting company and use CentOS and a lot other packages of Linux. On a server level only though.

One thing I know for sure when Linux finally take the stage from MS and Apple, this OS will face all the bleep of Viruses and crashes. It's the ones at the top who are always being challenged and because MS is at the top as far as client and consumer side PC's this is the reason why hackers attack PC's. If you were an arsonist would you want to burn down a house or a forest?

Think about it...

Still waiting to see Riffworks working with no problems and not extra modules installed (WINE) added to the OS to work?

but...

Dont get me wrong, I am not totally against Linux at all. I am pulling for it. I like the idea of open source, but it can get messy with too many hands in the pot trying to get this to work. In the end I bet with Linux or any other OS to come out, we end up in the same place as the other OS giants are now. Viruses, crashes, and licensing. Money can do strange things to people some times.

You can quote me on that.

I'm currently on the Beta version of ubuntu. its still not too stable. when the Stable LTS version comes out (9.04) I'll probably try this with Riffworks T4 (so I dont use up an instalation for standard)
It will take me some time to compile WINEASIO, but once I do, I'll post a tutorial.

See thats the thing too, I don't know what distribution to use. I know nothing about Unix/Linux and was told to use Ubuntu. Now your saying its not stable. I have a friend who uses Fedora and he says a lot of admins at work use it too. Just tonight he wanted me to help him connect to our wireless network and we had trouble getting it to connect.

I was given a copy of Ubuntu so I'll guess I'll use that first.

please say where I said it was unstable?
I said I was using a BETA version.
BETA = PRERELEASE.
there is a completely stable version currently out.
if you want to try linux, I must suggest you try ubuntu.... in about 14 days.
this is because the next STABLE version is officially released in 14 days.

Our work is driven by a philosophy on software freedom that aims to spread and bring the benefits of software to all parts of the world. At the core of the Ubuntu Philosophy are these core philosophical ideals:

1. Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees.
2. Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice.
3. Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software, even if they work under a disability.
