I have noticed in the forum postings and in public collaborations that there is a growing number of "holier than thou" types. This is just my personal observation of course and you may not agree..

Stop reading now unless you want to hear my rant..

---------------------------

I read things like..

I'll delete your shout unless xyz abc

and

posting songs less than 30 seconds and being outta tune is NOT cool

and

if your 1st note is not right don't record..

and

don't use the demo drummer

etc..

It's like some folks here have begun to give ultimatums and orders and are generally acting like they are just plain better than others and are now posting messages like they are God's f**king gift to music or 'the' authority on recording and playing.

I believe this is bad and irresponsible behavior and not really in the best interest of this community. True musicians would never make another musician feel less of themselves and those doing this should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone should take a minute and think about the different levels of members of this forum and buyers of this product and reflect a bit. Remember when you first started? How bad did you suck? How far how have you come?

In the future I'm encouraging my fellow junkies to just call the poster out on this crap. When you see this type of message.. Just call em on it and post a reply like "shut the "f**k up - You're nottttttttttt thattttttttt good."

End of subject.

All the best

Hi!

I feel guilty and some of the above mentioned statements are definitively mine, so here comes the fools defense speech : the sole reason for those comments were an act of CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. IMO, the best way to evolve and gain knowledge is to get constructive criticism. And I'm also sure we all agree on that the worst kind of advisory is to get a holier than thou attitude from someone.

Quite frankly, I do not regard the comments that I posted earlier this week as plump, disrespectful or evil in any way but if someone feels that way I'm truly sorry. I'm 100% certain this community is mature enough to be able to dissect the massive amount of riffcasts made so far and point at some very common blemishes that makes an otherwise very nice idea, concept or song shine less than necessary. At the very least, we should have the right to discuss this on the forum?

And who am I to give advice anyway? No one in particular, but I do have the right (just like everyone else) to discuss a diverse range of subjects and give friendly advice aimed at the community as a whole and express these on the forum. If that wouldn't be the case we might as well scrap the forum. If every single post made had to please everyone on the forum, it would become redundant and pathetic.

So I urge everyone to watch out for posts like the one I made and if someone feels violated they should step up and and send out the hounds of face punch just like Solone1 did :-)

Now I will follow a friendly advice some nice people gave me in the forum which was to uninstall that goddamn evil demodrummer and then start recording a new song!

EDIT: this is the post I'm refering to: http://www.sonomawireworks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=7796

well....I dont know if you are referring to me or not.....but call me what you want....if your guitar isn't in tune....well....I probably am better than you....lol!!!!!

PS: Joke.....please dont get bent! ;)

PS#2: The tuning part however.....is pretty basic wouldn't you agree? That crap is annoying!!! I send all my guitars to Bill....and he gives them a good once over....thats why all my tunes are unfinished and outta tune!!!! ::D:

I'm just saying.. there's lot's of new folks - and of varying abilities. there will be more. they aren't hurting anything by posting or recording and riffcasting. they are just using the product. And yeah, not in tune is sucky, but who cares who's best or better? really? does it matter that much to anyone? seriously? just let the music do the talking. we're all using the products here and not everyone will have the same abilities. :)

And your point is absolutely true, music is nor a contest nor a metric of who's better than me or you. Image

You gotta live with it. But from my point of experience it's very easy. Being technically perfect, doesn't necesseraly mean you're a good musician or artist. It basically means, you've spended (or wasted) lot of your lifetime learning to be technically perfect, without a benefical result. Otherwise the guys around Riffworld would play in a band and tour the world, right ?

Wonder why always the same people top the charts ? Wonder why always the same people comment on the chart toppers ? Wonder why 80% of the chart songs all sound the same ? Wonder why thoose "Junkies" are thoose that here, keep ranting about other detuned guitars and 30 sec songs ?

My father would say...go get a job, have a life...and if you're finsihed doing this return to Riffworld and tell about it in a song...;)

Whatever, go, destroy a hotel room, then lit up your guitar...:D

My Telecaster was in tune when I bought it in 1971 and if I alter it the warranty will be void

I believe I was the one who made the post about the demo drummer. I'm sorry if that makes me seem "holier than thou". Honestly, I assumed that comments like that would be taken as they were meant, tongue in cheek, not as a personal attack.

I have no more worth as a musician or as a person than anyone else does, but I stand by my original statements - I *am* tired of hearing that demo drummer on every single song, and listening to instruments that are out of tune is just not pleasant. It has nothing to do with who's better than anyone else.

I honestly hope that nothing I've ever said/posted on Riffworld would cause another musician to feel bad about themselves, but if someone wants to take a sweepingly general statement I made about no one in particular and apply it to themselves, I can't help that. To those folks I would say grow some thicker skin, as you'll likely run into people in your life who are even more rude, insensitive, and "holier than thou" than I am :)

Being a Martian Dignitary must be fairly holy Poots ??? ;)

And I dunno about any of my stuff sounding the same, charts or not, I struggle to even sound like myself, let alone anyone else

And, and, I always thought that anyone who put themselves up on a pedestal was personally inviting me to come and knock 'em off of it :P

Of course not, it's a well honed natural talent ;) but it does seem that as soon as anyone here does something that gets on someones elses nerves they all start talking bollocks :P

Please everyone note: When it comes to talking bollocks, I am the Holy of Holies

Damnit Bill! you always come up with something!

But, to be fair, I took Jounil's post to heart and now actually check my tuning all the time.. I may have even been the reason he posted that to begin with .. I sometimes, in haste, just grab the guitar or bass and just start playing/recording, even knowing my guitar likes to stay perpetually in a flat tune. So I, for one, appreciated his "criticism" on that...

BUT, I also agree with the other points made, my skin is thick enough to take whatever is dished, I just refuse to re-dish it back. I am BY FAR not the worlds best at anything, especially playing guitar or bass, I do it for my own enjoyment, BUT, I can sound better if I am in tune with the rest of the song, right? So now I tune everytime before I start recording.. or try.. I'm still a bit "hasty" at times.. :) as for the bends.. well.. thats another story..

Peace

Ain't nothin wrong with that. Sometimes you gotta grab yer axe and hit record before you lose that idea, regardless of whether you're in perfect tune or not. You may not be the world's best at anything, but neither is anyone else here :) And I've listened to your stuff and happen to like it. So there :P
