The claim by n00b Belicit, especially as we are all nerds who need teaching to his standard ;) made me wonder, what does anybody here reckon to be the "Best Solo in Riffworld" ? What makes a good solo anyway ? Is it like beauty in the eye of the beholder etc ? Is it melodic ? Is it based on how many millions of notes played in the shortest possible time ? I wonder, how about a shortlist of the possible nominees for best soloist ? For me this would have to include Gary Folkers, Pooter, Rickster, Matchy, Rick West, Cwighty and many others. I don't think my top twenty would include Mr Belicit Garonde ;)

The claim by n00b Belicit

Who's that ?

Depends on which kind of Solo people prefer. Some people like the classical speed metal solo, with thousands of licks played in less then three seconds. Others prefer purely melodical Solos. I prefer the Solos that actually fit the song and have a mixture of booth + they have to sound addictive and crazy.

I have to admit, I really dislike thoose standard speed metal and 80's rock Solos sweeping around Riffworld...specially because everyone plays them...this kills the last afford of actual individual sound on peoples music uploaded here.

I basically don't care a single instance, in how much somebody thinks to have, or shows skills in his style of "virtuose" playing. Most important stuff is...the solos doesn't fit the song...it sucks...;)

Forget your skills, learn to have a good ear, that's much more important.
No imagination is a limit I can´t afford.

It says Phonia, not Phobia. One is sound the other is your Girlfriends Mum.

Well said, sir!

But I must admit, playing fast is freakin' fun! So in terms of "speed solo", I'd say a tie between troy2006 and Coul10.

No one can actually say WHO is better or WHAT makes a better solo no matter what you think as far as if it fits the song or not. It really boils down to personal likes and dislikes. Just as Bill states, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." That's really what it is all about. It's whatever you yourself likes to hear. I can appreciate classical guitar, but I don't go out and buy anything or even go look to download any of that stuff. I do tend to lean toward Metal, some fast, some not, but I do know that anyone can play fast that's easy, it's playing it slow that's the hardest when it comes to soloing.

I can appreciate Eric Clapton soloing but I dont get all GAGA about it. I do dig on David Gilmour's style and sound though as well. Some here would say "David Gilmour, give me a break." That's what it boils down to, personal likes and dislikes.

I really don't mind all the different kinds but if the sound is bad like the gain was at 10 bass 10 mid 0 high 10 then it makes me cringe.

I also prefer kick ass rhythmy lead. Take Nuno Bettencourt for example, his rhythms are so tasty they smoke most peoples solos.

We Americans generally don't prefer British humor because we can't understand it :)
