Topic: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

[Moderator Note: Here is a link to How to Post Songs and Collaborate Online Using RiffWorks & RiffWorld.com: http://www.riffworld.com/how-to-use-riffworld
The following thread is a discussion of etiquette when using these services.]

i see a few RiffCasts posted lately with no credits, some i played on some i didnt. Its not about me getting credits, I just like to see who played. I think its rude and lazy not to take the time to type in a few names after all the time it takes to write arrange and mix a collab.give all the junkies their props! They all deserved to be mentioned. If the credits section has so many participants that the names run off the screen, then put the list of names in the description field.

Nothing is impossible for the person who doesn't have to do it.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

I think we, as a community, need to come up with a set of guidelines for Rifflink Etiquette.  I've thought about this quite a bit and here's my list of things I'd like to see Rifflinkers do more of.  Keep in mind this is just my opinion, and I'd like to see other people chime in on this as well:

- Keep your use of Riffworks effects to a minimum.  More effects use means slower performance for lots of RW users and slower loading times. Remember that other rifflinkers might not have a computer that's as fast as yours.

- PLEASE delete the layers you record that are not being used.  I may record a riff 30 times before I get it right, but there's no sense in keeping the takes that I screwed up. It slows loading time, and it makes baby Jesus cry.

- This one is more for the newbs: try to make your parts fit the song.  A mellow acoustic number probably doesn't need a CC DeVille guitar solo on top of it. I've been guilty of this one on more than one occasion, so I know from whence I speak tongue

- Try to make your parts fit in the mix. Remember that your instrument is not the only one in the song, respect the layers everyone else has laid down. A good percentage of the guitar parts I hear on Rifflink could cut their gain by 20-30% and still be heard in the mix.  Your parts should never cause RW's built-in limiter to kick in.  If they do, you're too loud.

- Don't forget to use the pan controls. The bass should be in the center, guitars should be panned left and right to varying degrees so that you don't have 5 guitars parts trying to occupy the same space in the stereo spectrum.  A few more layers with less gain, panned left and right will give a song a "fuller" sound.  Too many guitars in the same space make mud.

- Give credit to the people who contributed to the song when you Riffcast it using the Performers Field in RiffWorks.

- Newbies must buy the beer for everyone else.  Don't complain, virtual beer is pretty cheap wink

Whenever you're feeling down, just remember, you're a totally unique individual.  Just like everybody else.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

Here's one more suggestion: After you've casted a collab, state this as a last entry in the collab chat. Sometimes a collab is set up today, casted tomorrow, and has disappeared from the Riffcast list a few hours later. So as a latecomer, the only chance to find out if your addition will ever be heard in a complete cast is to search the database for the collab name. This would be easier to check if the chat already stated if a collab is still hot or already cold, if you know what I mean.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

Referring to redbarons reamark i have a question.:

when a collab is "'cold"', should it be deleted, if yes when is the moment!!!
or does a cold collab deleted anyway, after a period????

o, and red you are hot smile:)

Why wait for heaven, its here !!!!! (if it works)

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

The collab should NOT be deleted in my opinion.....it would disappear off the creators RiffWorld page.......and it will fall off the page eventually.............if the creator wants nothing more added a better solution would be to edit it in RiffWorld..... make it private and leave the invitee list blank......it won't show up on anyones  Public or My Invites list .....including your (the creators) own...... and you can always go back later and undo it......once deleted however all options go out the window.......ask ole Fooksy........  smile

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

When I'm in a collab and I like the way it is arranged, mixed, etc. I exit RiffWorld to make sure it is saved to the server (just in case) and then I reopen it and then save it to my hard drive. This way you have your own copy of the whole song just the way you like it.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

o ya! don't delete, lol. that was a mistake. still can't figure out why. sad
"something went horribly wrong the day fooks deceided to get jiggy with his rifflink"

does saving to hd keep all the riffs etc? or is it just a wav file?

"..you know, i have no professional training of singing and dancing"

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

It's supposed to save the RWS file and you can open it later and tweak or re-upload to rifflink if necessary.....  smile

However I have NEVER been able to save an entire Rifflink file locally......always something missing......:(   ........................... now others meanwhile have had much success saving locally.

[EDIT:] I have now managed to save a copy locally so it seems all is well and the Junkies can now RULE the world as planned.....muahahahhahahaaaaaaaaaaa lol

All good stuff sir Poot! I find that the one thing that bugs me most is when you see a great public collab go to the dogs cause folks think there needs to be a solo on EVERY f'ing riff! (just say nooooo). As you point out, this is not a good etiquette thing.

I know the collab creator can always take out riffs, layers, etc. when doing the final mastering, but I personally try to put in every riff done by every artist and not piss any contributors off or discourage the participation. Also, I think it causes singers to shy away from some tunes cause they can't sing over every solo and don't want to become the arranger of the song just so they can sing.

Rock on !!

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

quick question... in the collab. chat box, if you put an entry in there, is it automatically ascribed to you, or is it better to add your username as well?  freetime.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

If you're logged in to Rifflink, anything you type in the chat area will automagically be ascribed to your username.

Regarding solos on every riff, I'm with you solone1.  Normally I won't add a solo unless I'm asked, or if the creator of the collab has a riff titled "solo here".

Whenever you're feeling down, just remember, you're a totally unique individual.  Just like everybody else.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

I've started adding a "listen 1st" riff to all the collabs. I just record my voice with some basic idea of what's up and I toss in a "don't put a solo on every riff please'. This appears to be working and I would encourage others to try it and see how it works for them. And, I put the riff 1st up in the song bar so listeners hear it right off the get-go.

Off to dream up the next big song! LOL.

All the best! smile

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

" Automagically" ! I'm with you there, Pooterpatty! thanks.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

Yea I know about the solo syndrome. I can say one thing since I have been here almost every one has been polite to me and I appreciate that. I've had fun trying to write music.

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

yes i agree and i'm guilty as sin of doing it too i just didn't realise that you had to put the names back i mistakenly thought it was automatic.i am terribly sorry if anyone has taken offence and will make sure it doesn't happen again.once again my apologies to all concerned

Re: RiffWorld Song Posting & Online Collaboration Etiquette

I've found you have to join a collab' just to hear the basic song itself, to find that you have nothing to add to enhance the song. It can only be a wild guess if the title seems appealing. This may be a stupid question, but why can I not find a demo on riffcast?

If Rifflink doesn't work right currently, what is the point on pushing this issue at this point?
