I think we, as a community, need to come up with a set of guidelines for Rifflink Etiquette. I've thought about this quite a bit and here's my list of things I'd like to see Rifflinkers do more of. Keep in mind this is just my opinion, and I'd like to see other people chime in on this as well:
- Keep your use of Riffworks effects to a minimum. More effects use means slower performance for lots of RW users and slower loading times. Remember that other rifflinkers might not have a computer that's as fast as yours.
- PLEASE delete the layers you record that are not being used. I may record a riff 30 times before I get it right, but there's no sense in keeping the takes that I screwed up. It slows loading time, and it makes baby Jesus cry.
- This one is more for the newbs: try to make your parts fit the song. A mellow acoustic number probably doesn't need a CC DeVille guitar solo on top of it. I've been guilty of this one on more than one occasion, so I know from whence I speak
- Try to make your parts fit in the mix. Remember that your instrument is not the only one in the song, respect the layers everyone else has laid down. A good percentage of the guitar parts I hear on Rifflink could cut their gain by 20-30% and still be heard in the mix. Your parts should never cause RW's built-in limiter to kick in. If they do, you're too loud.
- Don't forget to use the pan controls. The bass should be in the center, guitars should be panned left and right to varying degrees so that you don't have 5 guitars parts trying to occupy the same space in the stereo spectrum. A few more layers with less gain, panned left and right will give a song a "fuller" sound. Too many guitars in the same space make mud.
- Give credit to the people who contributed to the song when you Riffcast it using the Performers Field in RiffWorks.
- Newbies must buy the beer for everyone else. Don't complain, virtual beer is pretty cheap
Whenever you're feeling down, just remember, you're a totally unique individual. Just like everybody else.
